On October 8th eight white-rumped vultures were reintroduced into the wild for the first time in India, with the birds originating from the Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre (VCBC) in Haryana. Aged six to eight years old, two of the birds are wild rescues while the other six were captive-bred in the centre.
Four of the birds will be released with satellite transmitters and the other four with GSM tracker devices that work on mobile phones. If there are no drug-related mortalities from birds in this release, then 20-25 birds will be released next year. The objective is to release 100 pairs of each of the three species in the next 10 years. Long-term, there are also plans to release long-billed and slender-billed vultures in Madhya Pradesh and Assam respectively.
The centre currently houses the white-rumped, long-billed and slender-billed vultures, with up to 40-50 nestlings of white-rumped vultures produced each year. If the reintroduction progresses well, it is planned that some space will be given over to breeding Egyptian and red-headed vultures in the centre as well.
