Toronto Zoo Indo-Malaya Pavilion Review

This one may be fairly short but i don't quite know.

Sumatran orangutan habitat:This habitat is small and the piping is ugly but it works and it provides tons of climbing space!!!But the part that really bugs me is the fact that Tornto Zoo doesn't have an outdoor area.First,i t would be good if they got rid of the green piping and added larger, higher and more natural climbing structures like fake with tons of roping and such to provide lots of climbing.Next, they could change that wooden platform at the window to rock work. The moat at the front is ok but it just scares me that a Kartiko incident may happen again. In the viewing area, they should move Kartiko's statue to the glass window. Also in the habitat,to provide even more climbing apparatus, they should have an O-Line that allows the rangutans to swing overhead of visitors of the paddocks areas while leting them roam in and free but protected like way.unlike the O-Line at National Zoo though, this one could twist and turn in a bunch of directions so they could explore basically all the Indo Area while still they could go through the top of the roof and into there indoor area (you kind of have to invvision it in your head, what i mean is the a part or the roof would be strengthen and hot wired of so the orang's could "land" without escaping and then thhey coul go through a door in the roof and climb down on of there fake trees into there exhibit.)Now since i've finshed explianing that,i'll start with the outdoor area.It would be a big huge net type tent and it would have tons of ropes, fake trees and a wooden feeding platform in the middle (like Orangutan Island) to feed them. They would enter the exhibit so it was up high like the gibbons and the reason i have so much arboreal stuff is beacuase the ground would be filled with about 2 feet of warm water to keep them up in the trees. They probaly would'nt fall and if they did, they would'nt drown as its only two feet.I think its a fine idea but then again im only 12.You could view it from inside at a glass area or from up above on a boradwalk. The water below could also have so fish or maybe that could serve as an outdoor yard for asian small clawed otters (the indoors being the gibbons)

gibbon habitat:I hink this habitat is awesome. Its large, has glass, has trees, includes lotts of climbing areas and there well contained. The only thing i'd add are the zoo's two muntjac deer, babirusa and small clawed otters. And being the otters swim in the moat,There could be a part wher you can go under the path to look through an underwater window. As for an outdoor habitat,i'd just mix them with the orangutans outside along with the otters and i would keep the muntjac and the babirusa indoors at all times.

Indonesian River Tank:this is another great area as its extremely spacious and its not packed with huge fish. The only thing i'd do to make it more like a flooded river is id add fake roots coming out of the backwall.

Reptile Tanks:These are fine in my mind. The python could have a larger area but either then that ther fine.

prevost's squirrel habitat:I've never seen there habiat as its super hidden and the barrier is harp wire.I've only seen a baby dart by once and thats it.Maybe there exhibit could be less concealed so you could see tem as ther very amusing animals.

gharial/turtle habitat:Awesome viewing but since the gharial is moving it would be nice if they turned this into a habitat for chinese aligators and they kept the turtles as i heard the zoo was the first to successfully breed them in North America and there very rare.I like the area so its prfectly fine the way it is.

If im missing anything, just remind me as the pavilion o me is very cluttered.

Addition:Not much, maybe just a few education areas and a few single species exhibits like fishing cats, bearded pig and francois langur. Also,a few murals in some habitats would be good.

guess i was wrong about the size

I think the orangs need a new exhibit completly. It probably ont happen any time soon though.

I'm really enjoying your pavilion reviews of the Toronto Zoo, and after seeing so many zoos on my road trip I feel that Toronto has one of the largest and most complete collections of any zoo in North America. I still feel that the zoo lacks a knockout exhibit, as no one seems to agree as to which is the best one at the zoo. Everyone has different opinions and there isn't any consensus as to the true zoo highlight...but then again that means that perhaps the zoo is consistent and better than many other zoos that have countless grottoes and ugly bars on their cages. I feel that the collection is awesome but the exhibits are for the most part average, but maybe that's better than the Cincinnati Zoo as there the collection is amazing but some of the enclosures are terrible.

After seeing numerous orangutan exhibits in North America, I still think that the lack of an outdoor yard makes the Toronto Zoo's orang exhibit one of the worst around. They should be spending money renovating for those apes before pouring money into their polar bears...but I suppose that exhibit improvements cost an absolute fortune and in time the orangs will eventually get an expanded habitat. I just hope that the zoo constructs something in the near future and doesn't wait too long to make changes.

Keep up the great reviews, as they are a joy to read!!!

Check out the Toronto Zoo Review's Thread! My reviews are there for all sections of the zoo. I do agree with the fact that having no outdoor yard is horrible, but I think the zoo should concentrate on the tundra and projects thay have on hand. When time comes the orangs will have the chance, but for now the Toronto Zoo has one of the best orang exhibits in terms of height. I have been to few zoos that allow there orangs to sore that high.

@Quartz92: I've also enjoyed your reviews as well, and it's great to read other people's perspective on major zoos. I always like to check what you've written about a particular zoo.

Probably the tallest orangutan exhibit in North America for sheer height is at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. There the two orang habitats aren't very wide, but each has a 65-foot, human-made banyan tree that is unbelievably high and double or triple the height at most other zoos.

for the outdoor part,it would be awesome if it could go at least 70 feet at toronto zoo

Oo yes, I forgot about that zoo. I think when I was there it was closed for something? I don't remember seeing those tress but shortly after I heard about them?

I f you would have seen how bad the polar bear exhibit was,you would have probably been poruing money into it.The only good part was the humungous pool but the rest was all concrete paving. The other thing was they had some huge rocks to climb on which also helpedd and the nderater viewing was actually ok in viewing.

Teehee :D

I remember there was this nice big Pufferfish in the Indo pavilion. When I was a little girl he was one of my favorite critters at the zoo. It's a little sad seeing those fish tanks off exhibit. If I had the money and resources, I'd give the Indo (and their out door exhibits) pavilion a nice facelift :)

I know eh.Like i said,it just lacks that asian type feel
