Hi
I've just found out that this place will soon be receiving a male and female southern black rhino. The male is a grandson of the Dubbo breeding program. I was wondering if anyone has visited or knows anything about it. From the website it looks good.

yes i know about this place , it is a more or less good safari park at least by the standards of my country, they had 1 white rhino the last time i visited a few years ago which shared its enclosure with eland antelope , well im sure this rhino will enjoy his new life there

AFRICAM SAFARI was founded in 1972 by Carlos Camacho near the city of Puebla by the Valsequillo dam. Puebla is a large city about an hour and a half from mexico city amd africam is another half hour,of course all depending on traffic. Carlos Camacho died in a tragic accident and Africam passed on to his daughter, Amy camacho. She has worked hard to make Africam one of the top 3 zoological collections in Mexico ( the others are the mexico City zoos and guadalajara, but remeber they recieve public funds). Africam is accredited by the AZA. I do not like safari parks in general, but Africam is in another category. Their conservation work with mexican species is noteworthy.

Now, for a review.First, the drive in area, accesible by the park´s buses or private car.
After the entrance there are two islands, one has mexican spider monkeys, in front there are ringtail lemurs. Both species have young. next are the african hoofed stock; impalas, elands, reticulated giraffes ( with varoius young), common waterbuck, sable antelope, along with nilgai, and guinea fowl, nile goose and many ostriches. After there are llamas, guanacos and capibari, with them are many mouflons. More african species follow, 4 white rhinos, grant´s zebras, brindled gnus, and more ostriches. After dromedaries and sarus cranes. Then there is Mexico´s largest asian elephant herd, 3 females and one male, separated from the vehicles by electric wire. Onto the feline area, first a large pride of african lions. Then after a group of white bengal tigers with 1 normal colored bengal tiger. The following space has white fallow deer, ponies and white donkeys together. After this strange mixture, comes a nice herd of scmitar horned orix with young along with barbary sheep or aoudad, which makes more sense geographically.
An asian space follows with axis deer, blackbuck, sika deer, water buffalo and gaur. Then are some interesting moated exhibits that are seen by foot. First a large island for about 10 chimpanzees, which are Mexico´s largest breeding group. Then there is a large hippo pool. After, striped hyenas and andean bears, separated of course. Back on to the vehicles for the final american area. First black bears and white tail deers, together. The area is large and the bears do not show interest in the deers, but i wonder. Anyway, separated after are bison and wapitis.
Next is the large part seen on foot, which is my favorite area because of its many species. Many scarlet macaws and military macaws abound but on islands and in aviaqries. Both species breed very well here. There is an interesting building for "Bichos". Here there is a varied group of different tarantulas ( including mexican red knee), millipedes, and scorpions. The reptiles here are boa constrictor, retuclated and burmese pythons, king snake, corn snake, false coral snake, mexican skinks, mexican beaded lizards, tokay and leopard geckos. But the amphibian section is the good part. Along with marine toads and tiger and iberian salamanders, there are many mexican species, yellow eyed, veracruz and large pachymedusa tree frogs, mexican pine toads and throny spiked footedfrogs, the mexican speckled green frogs, these last 3 all greatly endangered. Outside are savanah monitors and crocodile monitors. Also some green iguanas. There are variuos pools for Morelett´s crocodiles of different sizes, some rather large. Another pools holds various large red necked slider turtles. nearby are variuos large sulcata tortoises, a species that breeds well in mexican zoos.
There aviaries here. There are 2 species of hornbills, and curassow. One aviary has a pair of horned guan. However, the breeding aviaries for this very rare cracid, of which africam has the best record, are off exhibit. Which of course makes sense. carribean flamingos also breed very well here and have nice spaces. There are also whistling tree ducks and dark coots. Also a crested screamer.
many interestin mammals here. Two groups of mexican red brockets, common and golden agutis along with african porcupines. The only great anteater in Mexico is here and next door is a nice trio of pudu. There is a nice exhibit for meerkats. The primate species here are mandrill, patas monkey, ruffed lemur, squirrel monkeys, red handed tamarins and a colony of hamadyras baboons on a concetre island. A large cave holds egyptian fruit bats. Next to it is a very large butterfly house, built like a mayan pyramid. Inside amid many vegetation are 12 meican butterfly species. Past nice exhibits for red panda and mexican wolves there is a large open walk through austrialian exhibit. here there are emus, black swans, bennett´s wallabies, grey and red kangaroos.
Back to the restaurant, for some great authentic mole poblano and enchiladas de pollo con mole. The food here is great. Then on to the bird show. Here the species that perform are scarlet and green macaws, blue crowned parrots, cockatoos, crows, barn owl, spectacled owl, 1 chicken, caracaras, harris hawk, king vultures and golden eagle. The 2 women presenters avoid the bad jokes that many animal presentation have in mexico and i liked the presentation. There are various bird breeding aviaries which are off exhibit but which can be heard on the way to the exit.
The gallery has a selection of my pictures from africam.

One female southern black rhino has now arrived.
Testament to Africam being a great and tested zoo.

Yes, Kifaru, i was told that a female black rhino had just arrived. They are waiting for a male black rhino to arrive, to have the only pair of this species in any latin american collection, at this moment. this may all relate to the original post on this thread.

Carlos77 thankyou for picking up on this, I enjoyed your review. I'm assuming that the young male black rhino hasn't yet arrived?

I visited on the 16th of april, 2011. The female black rhino was not on exhibit yet, and the male black rhino had not yet arrived. The 4 white rhinos are the largest herd in mexico for this species.
