Hey everyone, I'm new to your site but definitely not new to zoos! Zoos and animals are my passion, and I'm definitely going to pursue a career in the zoo world. Currently I'm a college Junior majoring in Zoo Science. I've been getting out there and actually working in the field, first at a sanctuary for unwanted birds, then at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park, and most recently at the Adventure Aquarium. I'll be happy to answer any questions you guys might have about any of those places. In addition I love to visit zoos and aquariums, so most vacations are based around one or both. I take lots of pictures everywhere I go so I'll have to start posting some on this website. Can't wait to start chatting!

Hello and welcome to Zoochat!

I wish that the college that I go to had Zoo Science as a major. My school doesn't offer that many things that have to do with animals, as the school is mainly an Engineering and Agricultural school, but they still have a good science program. I chose Zoology over Animal Sciences as Animal Science is mainly for people that want to be veterenarians.

Welcome to ZooChat!!! Enjoy the amazing resources that this site has to offer.

Welcome to ZooChat, I hope you enjoy it, I post and read according to the time available so great to also tell of your experiences as well as post your own and your questions. It sounds like you are geared up for your career. Do you know which group of animals you wish to specialise in?

I am over here in the UK and my my passion are chimps, gorillas and herring gulls!! They are not too fond of herring gulls where I live and are trying to get rid of them by various means,I have three living on my roof and they are part of the furniture!!

So welcome!

I want to work with either birds or herps (reptiles & amphibians). I've had pretty much equal experience with both, but I've also worked with some mammals (most notably african crested porcupines, and hippos) as well as invertebrates.

As for posting about my experiences, where would be the best place to do that on this forum?

Hi fkalltheway,

Don't know a great deal about birds but am bit by bit learning from the behaviour of the gulls that live on my roof and the many domestic birds that life in the garden. I live near many bird reserves and many birds visit during the winter so I go to watch them alot. You certainly have diverse knowledge hippos and birds!

I am sure there are many aspects of this site that I don't yet know about. I tend to look at the FORUMS from the different countries and look at the various threads to see if there are any of any interest to join in the discussion. Otherwise you can put your own thread up with your experiences and wait for people to view it and comment. Some threads go on for a long time some are short. You often see the same people discussing the same sorts of things. There may be many other ways to access the site so others might help. That might be a useful thread itself.

I put a FEED button (above right) on my homepage (yahoo in my case) and that gives me updates, that is where I saw yours. There is also a Facebook page.

:)

No, but I know someone who does, and not for anything animal related at all. I go to Delaware Valley College, which is actually in Pennsylvania.

Zooplantman, where are you from?

I'm just outside NYC. And I went to school in the Delaware Valley area (not your school though) and know it well.
