This southern zoo got its start when a group of firemen collected a group of exotic animals and kept them in the firehouse. The collection was later moved to city land where the zoo is located today. The zoo has seen some expansion and improvements over the years including the most recent, Mississippi Wilderness showcasing the local wildlife. The zoo has an ambitious masterplan that will greatly expand the zoo and include geographic regions of the world.
The most notable expansion of the zoo's collection occured in 1948 when a local college president led a effort to purchase several animals from the country of Liberia including: chimpanzees, mangabeys, colobus, a lemur?, and pythons.
