The Johannesburg Zoo gots its start from a small animal collection located on the property when 200 acres it was deaded to the local government for recreational purposes by the firm H. Eckstein & Co. A partner in the firm, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, was a major player in the zoo's early development with his many donations of animals.
