Just wondering how many people are/were in a youth club run by your local zoo? Did you enjoy it, feel it influence your view on animals and your career, etc etc. :D

I'm personally in my final year of the Oryx Club at Marwell (I'll become a volunteer next year when I leave the club), a youth club for 4-17 year olds in three stages that's been running for 'bout 35 years now. They do monthly meetings which I've absolutely loved since joining at eight years old, and feel not only is it a good way to meet friends of a similar interest, but I feel influences a whole load of kids to appreciate animals and the natural world as a whole; no better way to make them the future inheritors of the planet then getting them out in the zoo once a month. :) I don't see too many zoos running these nowadays, a shame given the influence they can have.

The only club around when I was a child was the XYZ club at London.

Chester started the Junior Members about 1979, I was 22 then, so I was too old to join. They are still active and were spotted by several Zoochatters in the lion enclosure last week.

I am about to join the YATZ club at Taronga (Youth At The Zoo). This will hopefully give me the experience and boost to become a vollie once I finish.

Durrell have the Dodo Club for 3-16 year olds and the DCG (Durrell Conservation Group) for 13-16 year olds. I am a member of both.
