Elena Well-Known Member 5+ year member 29 Dec 2023 #62 Today the zoo announced that Phoebe the Sumatran tiger recently arrived from Wildlife Safari and that their former tiger, Bintang, moved to Wildlife Safari on a breeding recommendation: Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium on Instagram: "Spread the word and tell your FRIENDS that the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium has welcomed a new Sumatran tiger named Phoebe! This 2 1/2 -year-old tiger recently arrived from Oregon’s @wildlife.safari, which also happens to be the new home for our former resident, Bintang, who transferred last month per a breeding recommendation from @zoos_aquariums' Species Survival Plan (SSP). Phoebe made her public habitat debut this morning, and the inquisitive 180-pound female has been busy exploring her new KCZoo surroundings. The SSP makes decisions on placement and mating of animals to ensure the genetic diversity of this endangered species and hope for its future. Unfortunately, less than 400 Sumatran tigers have been recorded in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss and poaching. Learn more about conservation to protect the Sumatran tiger species and see Phoebe during our daily 3 pm informational chats at Phoebe’s habitat!
