Kanto Trip 2026

I'm going to Japan (Kanto region) for a weeklong trip (not too packed). I'm staying in Tokyo (Marunouchi region) and Kamakura (close to Enoshima Aquarium) along with some short trips (ie. Yokohama). It's my first time in Asia so it's going to be a new experience. What are recommendations for zoological facilities, other must-see attractions (zoos, museums, aquariums, wildlife sites, restaurants, etc.), and advice? Thanks. Right now, I'm definitely going to visit Ueno Zoo, Zoorasia, and Enoshima Aquarium. I'm going with my family so it's not exactly going to be zoo-packed and that "rushed".

Hi!

Let me recommend 2 places.

Saitama Childrens Zoo
http://www.parks.or.jp.e.aml.hp.transer.com/sczoo/
It's called "childrens zoo", but is a large zoo with a nice collection of small mammals.

Kamogawa Sea World
Kamogawa Sea World|鴨川シーワールド-東京・千葉の水族館テーマパーク
A large aquarium with orcas, walrus, etc.
It might not comply with western standards for animal welfare in some ways, but is a nice place to enjoy with your family and see unique species.

Both are easily accecible by train and bus from Tokyo with a day trip.

I was thinking of possibly going to Saitama Children's Zoo but it's a bit far & the only target species would be quokka. For Kamogawa Seaworld, we are probably going to 2 aquariums (the most convenient ones) so Hakkeijima Sea Paradise & Enoshima Aquarium
If you're going to Ueno Zoo, you might want to stop by at the NationalMuseum of Nature and Science.
HOME | 国立科学博物館
It's a 5 minute walk from the zoo, and has the best collection of animal specimen in Japan. It's a nice place to enjoy with your family too.
For the museum are there any live animal exhibitions or rare taxidermy/specimens?

Yes, Saitama Childrens Zoo is a bit far... It has an excellent collection of rare small mammals, but maybe they are not that rare in your home country.

The museum in Ueno has a nice collection of specimen of marine animals, land mammals, birds etc.
Here is part of the collection:

It also has a rare specimen of the extinct Japanese Wolf.

The museum does not have live animals.
If you don't have a lot of time, you can just stop by the ground floor and 3rd floor or the main building to have a quick look at the specimens for 1 hour. I think it's worth it.

So for my first day & 1/2 will be spent where I'm staying in the Marunouchi area. I'll probably go to the following on May 10th or 11th. Is there anythings I should add, remove, or anything else I should know? What order should I do them in? I'm hoping to do some birding in a couple of the gardens, are there any interesting/common species that are rarer elsewhere?;
  • Tokyo Imperial Palace
  • Kokyo Gaien National Garden & Wadakura Fountain Park
  • Kitanomaru Garden/Park
  • Hibiya Park
  • Kando Myoujin Shrine
  • Yasakuni Shrine
  • KITTE Marunouchi
  • Akhibara area
  • Coredo Muromachi
  • Tokyo Ramen Street - Lunch
  • Any good dinner places?
