Zealandia Karori

I know this isn't a zoo but I nevertheless found it very interesting and some other countries have wildlife threads.

I went to New Zealand a year ago in complete ignorance of the unique native fauna and the terrible loss that has befallen them. We went to Karori in Wellington not knowing what to expect, my friend who I was visiting became a member as it was a great place to take all their visiting tourists.

It's a beautiful valley with a pest-proof fence where you can see species which have been lost in many places. We saw tuatara sitting out in the sun (sporting coloured ID beads on the back of their necks) New Zealand falcon flying overhead and even one eyeing us from a branch just above the path, there are kiwi but we didn't see any, there are weta, saddlebacks, bellbirds, kaka, I can't remember everything too well without digging out some notes but it's a lovely place and well worth a visit.

Karori is indeed a fantastic place. They prefer to be called Zealandia now which is a stupid name in my opinion so I'll keep calling it Karori. Some of my photos in the NZ Wildlife gallery were taken there. As well as species OrangePerson mentioned, there are now a pair of takahe there too. Their website is http://www.sanctuary.org.nz/

That's two places that have got takahe since I was there!!! Still guess you'd be lucky to spot them here.

It's definitely worth doing one of the guided walks unless you know what you are looking for! They know where the tuatara likely to be and, of course, spot the birds.

oh right. I just checked the NZ gallery and almost all my wild animal photos have been purged :(
The only one left from Karori is a tuatara with its neck beads showing.

I'll check if it's the same one in my photo :) I stupidly went without a battery in my SLR so mine are very poor. The kaka in my photo raised 4 chicks this year though according to one of the people who does the blinging!
