Hello,
I am looking for information on the last kiangs kept in the United States. I know that after San Diego Wild Animal Park phased out the species, their herd ended up in private facilities (Canyon Colorado and Shadow Nursery). However, both Canyon Colorado and Shadow Nursery have closed by now... Does anyone have any info of Kiangs being sent to other holders after these closures? Has the species completely disappeared from the United States, or are there still some in private hands? I would appreciate any info about possible current holders or historical US holders of San Diego herd descendants.

Only San Diego hold (and bred) kiangs in the USA. They sent the offsprings to Canyon Colorado and Shadow Nursery (Winchester), not sure if they also bred there…

San Diego started in June 1985 with a female DORA (born 1983 at Tierpark Berlin, † 2004)

In May 1986, San Diego received a male CHINGAN (born 1982 at Rostov), he left 4 years later for Canyon.
In June 1986, they received a wild caught pair 1,0 DAHENG (the breeding male, † 2000) and 0,1 SHENGQU († 1993).

In March 1990, San Diego received a brother of DORA, JIDO (born 1987, † 2007)

In September 1994, they received a second female from Tierpark Berlin YVONNE (born 1993, † 2002)

In October 2002, San Diego received two kiangs from Tierpark Berlin 1,0 MIRANDO & 0,1 SURINAM (both born 2000), they went in January 2009 to Winchester = the end of holding for SD

In December 2023, only one female is registered on Species360 in North America, at Black Beauty Ranch.

Voilà!

For those interested in earlier kiangs held in the USA:-

According to Crandall (1964), Bronx Zoo only ever held four kiangs; the first was a gift from the Duke of Bedford in 1909. Another was a dangerous stallion, acquired from London Zoo, that lived in New York from 11th September 1914 until 18th October 1930. The longest-lived of New York's kiangs was a female, acquired on 20th August 1929, that died 25th November 1952.

Crandall also records that two hybrid foals (male kiang X female onager) were bred in New York.

The only other kiang in the USA listed by Crandall, is an individual that lived in Washington Zoo from 14th October 1934 until 16th August 1960. This animal is the longest lived kiang listed by Weigl (2005). Weigl provides additional information about this animal; it was a male, born London Zoo 26th June 1930, and before being sent to Washington, spent time at both Woburn Abbey and Hagenbeck's Tierpark.
