Kijuvu

Kijuvu the gorilla who lived at Taronga Zoo between 1996-2001 is expecting her third baby at Prague Zoo this month. Kijuvu already has two offspring, Moya (2004) and Tatu (2007).

Kijuvu's mother Kriba still lives at Taronga Zoo with her five year old sister Kimya.

Just a little thing (sorry for nittpicking) - the name is actually Kijivu, at least it has been since she is in Czech Republic. She is due from April to June they don't know for sure. I wonder whether they will continue with naming gorilla offspring by counting in swahili:)

About her offpring - the older Moja* is a female, younger Tatu is a male.

*(the transcription is Moja but they pronounce it czech way - the same way like you would pronounce Moya in english)

just a short update, they are assuming second half of April (a bit of info popped up in one article about official welcoming of this season).

Update - earliest date is in May; it looks to me like April was all just the hype caused of webcams hosted by one czech newspapers which recently created some new partnership with the zoo. May seems to be more legit estimate.

The baby is not likely to be named Nne (four) because the name doesn't sound nice on it's own. It will be named in swahili.

The zoo has given up on breeding form Kamba due to her age and Shinda because of past contraceptive measures. It is clear they don't intend for the same to happen to Moya as they are already talking about the five year olds departure from the zoo.

There is an article about it here:

Wrong info.

The father Richard/Ricky came from Paignton's bachelor group but was born and spent his earlier years at Frankfurt Zoo.

The young female will soon have to leave the group to prevent mating with her father. An exchange with a similar aged unrelated female would give Prague a 2nd breeding female, as Kijivu is obviously the only breeder they have at present.

They should bring in Kijuvu's younger sister Kimya from Taronga Zoo, she's only a month younger than Moya. I still think Moya is too young to move at the age of five, they don't breed until they're at least seven.

If they've already bred from Kijivu, why would they want to bring in related genes? Better to get a completely unrelated female to maintain genetic diversity.

:p

I can't see the need for any more Gorillas born in Australia to be sent back to Europe- with the exception of the odd surplus male perhaps. We have a far bigger population here (with genetic representation from the Australian groups also) and it would seem better for the Australian Zoos to build up their own self sustaining population by exchanges and maybe the formation of one or two additional groups at e.g. Perth, Adelaide or (even) Australia Zoo.
