Chester Zoo Lar Gibbons

Am sure this was mentioned else where but cannot find it.

Do Chester plan to breed the Lar Gibbons at all? Also the two sons are getting on now is there any plans to move these on?
 
If my memory serves me correctly all the males have had the snip while they were at Chessington as they didn`t want any more young from them,i believe Chester got the Gibbons to gain experience of keeping them again before another species was brought in.

I think someone told me one of the species was Muller's Gibbon, but he was not a mammal keeper.
 
your right that all the male gibbons are castrated, the youngest 'jeremy' also as fingers missing on one hand after a dispute with his younger brother,( in accordance with zoo keeper gallows humor he was called jeremy after the late great jezza beadle as he has one hand bigger then the other!) not sure if it was for chester to gain experience with them though!!!! more like if the orangs caught them and pulled them to pieces then no great loss (i'll take my cynical hat off now!)

I heard that too, which would make sense aswell.
 
The female is called Grommit. She is living with the Bornean Orang Utans and will be leaving Chester if anyone needs a breeding female. The males are staying with the Sumatran Orang Utans.

So they were obtained so that Chester could gain experience in keeping them as a mixed exhibit with Orangutans, without risking a rarer Gibbon species.

It seems to have been a successful experiment. My personal choice of a replacement species would be Pileated but they probably want one that is geographically correct.

I would think that the current group would have to move on first before they obtained another species, with them being a non-breeding group it may be differcuilt to place them.
