Leopard Tortoises in QLD

There's plenty of Leopard tortoises around.

But not in Queensland.

After deliberating since 2006 on my application to keep this species, the Queensland Government have finally denied my request.

Reason? The Leopard Tortoise poses a SERIOUS risk to the environment!!!

Smart State eh?

I can't believe the decision, they will allow species like Binturong and Marmosets, 2 species i believe would have more of pest risk, but not Leopard tortoises! and the worst part being they allow other tortoise species!

I can't help but suspect that if Australia Zoo, Dreamworld or Sea World wanted leopard tortoises, they would have leopard tortoises.

Maybe it's the name "Leopard" in front of Tortoise that had them confused after all this is Queensland with one foot still in the dark ages

Another reason might be that if they got out of their exhibit it could be quite hard to re-capture them due to their amazing speed :D

So what should I do?

Different deodorant, give up shaving, marry a Yank????

Seriously? Become good friends with your local state MP. Government or Opposition, it doesn't matter. Make the point that Darling Downs will grow with time if mindless bureaucrats don't stop it, and that means jobs for the region.

It seems like DDZ lacks friends I'm high places. You need to get some.

Yes, Steve, you obviously don't schmooze the big-shots like some apparently do.

Ah Queensland - 100 years and 1 hour behind the rest of Australia.

If only it was that easy! Been there, done that. Our local MP is the shadow minister for the portfolio that controls zoos. He is very supportive but the current government enjoys such a huge majority that the Opposition is ineffective.

The government has it's own agenda. It is coast-centric and has spent billions of bucks on infastructure on the coast. Should the Darling Downs Zoo ever become as popular as, say, TWPZ the government might have to spend a few bucks on infastucture west of Brisbane. In the current government's infastructure budget, which is hugely bloated with extra dough fom Rudd's nation building handouts, there is not one dollar allocated to big projects on the Darling Downs. We just don't rate out here. If you drive up, or down, the coast from Brisbane you will see huge Main Roads department [taxpayer funded] brown tourist directional signs helping you to get to the various "Worlds" on the Gold Coast or that well known animal investment property on the Sunshine Coast. If you drive west of Brisbane you will not find one brown tourist directional sign to help you find the Darling Downs Zoo - and that's not through want of asking.

Our industry has a massive problem in this State inasmuch as the senior public servant who licenses zoos in this State is married to a leading light of Animal Liberation. Imagine the pillow talk in that household when it comes to discussing new zoo regulations [or maybe even Leopard Tortoises for the Darling Downs Zoo]. Although this situation has been asked about in Parliament, the government just laughed at what many regard as a clear conflict of interest.

What do we do next? Just keep on keeping on I guess.

My sympathes with you Steve. I feel that this govt. has had it in for you from the start.
