Taronga Zoo Lions

Hi,

Does anyone know what is the future for the two "cubs" (essentially adult) lions Johari and Asali at Taronga born 2003? Do they plan to breed from them or send them to other zoos around Australia or New Zealand. I believe their mother Kuchani was herself only a few years old when she gave birth to them and considering they are now around 7 years old I thought Taronga would breed from them a few years ago.

Thank you :)

I got spend time with them as cubs. The looked quite happy together last time I visited the zoo. Bruiser (their dad) has two sisters at dubbo, all born at Mogo Zoo and hand raised and there is no intention to breed with them either. Well represented bloodlines (not sure if they are jasiri's or bruisers and his sisters or both) that are well represented though.

Kuchami was born in 2001 at the Auckland Zoo, she is considered valuable to the breeding programme as her mother Kura and her father Tonyi were born in the USA and come from outside the region. Kuchami's cubs, Johari and Asali, were born in 2003. There are currently no plans to breed with any of the four lions in Taronga's pride as they make up a well intergrated family group and there is not the space for the possibility of another four cubs. Furthermore, Jambo, the father, was born in 1999 so in all liklehood these four animals will all pass away around a similar time.

Jambo's two sisters live with a vasectomised male Jasiri to prevent breeding as already mentioned. There are currently plans to breed Kuchami's mother, 13 year old Kura, for the third time with Ngala, a male from South Africa.

Tonyi is one of the lions that is het for white - as is Tembo.

Yep, there's a bit about it here:

WHITE LIONS IN CAPTIVITY TODAY

In the summer of 1998 white lioness Nakanda became queen of the African Savannah. She was born in Philadelphia in 1996 and loaned to Columbus Zoo, along with her two heterozygous brothers, Tombo ("Clover") and Tonyi ("Charmer"), in 1997. The first offspring of Nakanda was a heterozygous male named Simba, who went to Parc Safari. Philadelphia's white lion pride was loaned to Columbus from August, 2004 to May, 2006, while Philadelphia constructed their new exhibit called Big Cat Falls.
