Last month a living Loggerhead turtle was found on the beach near Wassenaar. The animal was in a bad condition and brought to Blijdorp / Rotterdam Zoo were it recovered ( see video Aangespoelde schildpad vertroeteld in Blijdorp ).
Loggerheads are very rare in the Neterlands and living animals were found in :
1707
1894
1927
2008 - 2 specimens about a month apart, one was recovered at Blijdorp, the other at Burgers Zoo, Arnhem. Both were releated later into the wild.
2015 the one from the video
Dead animals were found 3 times sofar ( 1954, 1959 and 1988 ).

The turtle Blijdorp received in 2008 actually was a Kemp's ridley turtle. Blijdorp mis-indentified it as a loggerhead.
