Taronga Zoo long-beaked echidnas....

does anyone know anything about the status of the long beaked echidnas at taronga?

last i heard they are now kept off display (not that i ever saw the nocturnal creatures out of their burrow in all my visits to taronga over the years!)

still, tarongas pair are the only representatives of their species in captivity anywhere in the world as far as i know and it would be fantastic if they bred.

all i know on the subject is that the male has a stupidly low sperm count and that the female is around 30 years old. but that nonetheless the animals had started to show some promising signs and there was hope.

obviously that hope never came to fruition as it was some time ago, but i would love some updates, if there are any at all.
