Thank you, I was not aware that the plans were still on-line.
Unfortunately I still cannot enlarge or download the one mentioned. However the Amended Plan at the bottom of page2 works for me and it has pretty colours too :)

Thanks for that . It seems the Komodo house is going to be a main addition with many herp exhibits and a mysterious small mammal?

There is actually an open space between the off-show tiger accommodation (indoor dens and outdoor cage) and the largest orang outdoor enclosure (to the south east of the Monsoon Forest). It is shown in the photo below, which was taken from the path between the lory's part of the Bali Aviary and the Bamboo bridge with the Monsoon Forest beyond the left hand edge of the shot.



The area between the Lazy River and the footpath is planned to become the tapir exhibit. The area on the other side of the path is shown on the plans as a second outdoor tiger exhibit. The Revised Site Plan shows 2 dry moats and a wall topped by steel wires between the adjoining ends of tiger and orang enclosures. This second tiger enclosure has not been built yet and we have yet to hear definite news about the unbuilt parts of Islands.

I don't believe anything will happen this year, the zoo now has a finished islands, with all species moved in. They will concentrate on having a good first year with it all complete.

I also don't think there will be a phase 2, it will just be additions like the rest of the zoo, i.e they could build the tapir enclosure or the komodo house, and open for next Easter.

I guess this will depend on funds and if any other current exhibit needs enhancing or rebuilding first. I believe the Chimp house is the one exhibit that needs replacing more than any other (I'm sure people will disagree). Id also like to see the sun bears over in islands instead of a second tiger exhibit.
 
Ag999, I don't think they've made a decision about phase 2 of Islands yet.

jde7582, the chimp house does need replacing.
 
Definitely agree that the chimp house needs replacing, are there still plans to do this? Would be great if they can do it whilst their long serving keeper is still there.
I too would prefer to see the sun bears eventually move over to islands rather than a second tiger enclose

Long term there are plans to put the Chimps elsewhere in the zoo - the problem in the immediate future would be re-housing the chimps whilst they built a replacement house before then. There is no extra land in the area that would allow access to the outdoor enclosure so the only option would be to demolish the current house and then rebuild..

No other zoo would have the space to house that many Chimps together which would mean seperating them. Far from ideal (to the point that I don't think Chester would do it unless absolutely necessary)
 
I've never much liked the current Chimpanzee housing.

Would they have been part of 'Heart of Africa' (or whatever it was going to be called) ?
