Marineland Canada Marineland Canada News

Hoping the CAZA/AZA statement was not just lip service and there is some behind the scenes activity occurring.... Nova Scotia will never happen in time, and there are no success stories of beluga sanctuaries.

One bread crumb in the media I've that particularly caught my attention: The Fisheries Minister stated that the Canadian Government approved the export of Marineland belugas in 2021 [the Mystic import] and would consider again exports that are in the best interest of the whales.

A recent drone flyover over of the park confirmed that the bears are still at the park. I understand the challenges of moving the belugas and other sea animals out, but I would imagine the bears would be some of the relative easiest to rehome?

Large carnivores especially ones that are likely hybrids of many subspecies of black bear can be harder to move, especially older animals. Large cats are slightly easier to move because there are many large cat sanctuaries. But there aren't a lot of legitimate sanctuaries in Canada, a lot of bear sanctuaries in the states seem to save space for wild bears. Though I don't see Marineland being too picky about where they send them so it might just be that they have been focused on the marine animals and aren't prioritizing the bears.
Extreme take is they recognize the level of scrutiny being placed on the whales and think euthanizing the bears would be over looked.

According to the MMIR posted this month, SeaWorld still has ownership of some of the female sea lions at Marineland Canada. I am curious why they have not removed them from the park. Of course it is possible that some/all may have died and Marineland did not report to SeaWorld.

(Almost?) All non-US facilities, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi being a notable exception, no longer report to the MMIR. Their last reported animals have been left as is regardless of their actual current status.

For Marineland Canada specifically, they had never submitted complete or updated data, the only records they ever contributed to the MMIR were those of animals imported into and out of their park (to and from the US) — only the initial transfers and prior history, with no further updates. They stopped providing additional updates on their stock in the early 90s. These records are not an accurate representation of their current inventory.

I concur with the exception that animals that are still owned by US entities are still required to be reported (which explains why SW Abu Dhabi reports).

Regarding this , as far as I know 3 of them are still around. One had passed in 2023, and then another in 2024. There might have been a third passing but not 100% sure as the solicitor general & animal welfare services only confirmed 2 sealion passings.

“One dolphin, one harbour seal, one grey seal, two sea lions and two Magellanic penguins have also died at the park in the past five years”
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/marineland-beluga-1.7453210

Since the article’s release, Feb 2025, there was only another seal passing (making their remaining harbour seal numbers 3) and then the incident regarding Andre, nothing else.
