Mauritius kestrel News

One of the great conservation stories ( and one of our ZooChatters was actively involved in this rescue ! ).
To keep an eye on the future development of the species we now can post news about the species ( and old little known facts ) in this thread.
To start with an overview about the conservation project from the beginning untill now :

Fresh hope for one of world's rarest raptors - BirdGuides
Mixed results, flourishing in western Mauritius and reintroduced in north completely disappeared. The species is once more endangered now. The recovery program has been reinstated.

This is the only Mauritian bird species that I failed to record on film - could not find one anywhere.

From the Facebook-site of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation

Mauritius Kestrels were hack-released from five nest boxes in the Maccabé / Brise Fer area in the Black River Gorges National Park in the 2019/20 breeding season. The source of this release were eggs collected from Mauritius Kestrel artificial nest boxes in the Bambou Mountains. The eggs were brought to the Gerald Durrell Endemic Wildlife Sanctuary, a specialist captive rearing facility in Black River village, and were hand reared until the chicks reached an age of approximately 28 days. At that point the chicks were put in the nest boxes and were fed everyday until they became independent juveniles (able to hunt effectively and feed themselves). Fifteen birds were released in Maccabé / Brise Fer from December 2019 to February 2020.
