Medication used for Spotted Hyenas

Hey everyone,
I'm currently doing mass study into Spotted Hyenas for my husbandry manual, however a key component I am struggling with is medications used to treat illness and injuries in these hyenas. Does anyone know of any, or somewhere they can point me to find out.

Thank you and kind regards
Liz

Hi Liz

The Chapultepec zoo in Mexico had an elderly spotted hyena for many years which I believe had a health condition of some kind.

You might want to contact them about what medication was used to treat this animal.

Whatever the final use for your husbandry manual might be, wouldn't it be more prudent to inquire of zoo vets (whom I trust you are in contact with anyway for this project) rather than tp crowd source info from unknown zoo enthusiasts?

I completely understand your question and yes I am in contact with many zoological vets, I myself work alongside some. However this has only really given me access to Australian Captive Hyena knowledge, I’m keen to find out sources for over seas groups and facilities (I’ve linked up with a few already), and putting up a post here was suggested by many of my colleagues as I don’t know all of the facilities that have Spotted hyenas throughout the world and here, like already suggested, I’m able to learn about places from other countries, who I may be able to contact

There's about 70 zoos with spotted hyenas in the USA, and they run the gamut from worst of the roadside zoos to some of the best in the country. ABQ BioPark, Bronx Zoo, Buffalo Zoo, Columbus Zoo, Carson Springs, Denver Zoo, Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, Franklin Park Zoo, Milwaukee County Zoo, Oakland Zoo, Phoenix Zoo, San Antonio Zoo, San Diego Zoo, St Louis Zoo, Stone Zoo, Sunset Zoo, Turtle Back Zoo, and Zoo Miami are the larger/more reputable places here with them.
