I'm presuming Leia is probably pregnant too, whether they know it or not..Maybe even 'Martha' too?- it is quite possible for a past breeder like her to successfully have another even at her age.
I reckon they need more than a few Orangutan babies to develop the 2nd phase of ROTRA-like a big input of money.... Also as the Borneans have proved relatively inactive even in the new setting, maybe they are having second thoughts anyway?
Do you think the borneans may be moved on if there numbers get too high?
I'm fairly sure the zoo isn't near it's capacity in regards to the Borneans. Without Donna and Sibu, the zoo can use the old island again as well as the sections of the old house.
The capacity has been talked about before at about 15 orangutans.
is that 15 Bornean or 15 of both species?
I'm pretty sure it's the latter, but i'd like it clarified

Pertinax, please predict when I will go to Paignton and have some nice weather.
A good balanced group that get on together at a rough guess.I would like to make it clear that it does not rain all the time at Paignton! It hasn't rained properly since bongorob's visit on Saturday ( a few drops overnight) and it's very pleasant today.
Regarding the abundance of orang births at Chester, maybe they could pass on some tips to Paignton's quartet?
Elephant news:
- Birma has settled well into her new home (See Birma thread)
- Sithami confirmed pregnant, Jangoli almost certainly also pregnant, but not far enough along for lab confirmation. Thi mated last week.
- Nurnberg are getting 2 elephants, including one from Chester. Probably Tunga, since a deal has been done to relocate him, and negotiatons are going on to place Raman. It'll be a shame to see the group of 3 playful youngsters broken up, but I suppose it's necessary to allow the next generation to come along.
- Jangoli's tail used to be manipulated and have cream applied when there was a hands-on system of elephant keeping. Since the protected contact scheme was put in place, that hasn't been possible, which led to her kinked tail atrophying and dying off. She has since been trained to present her tail to the keepers for it to be cleaned and dressed.
I think that's it...!
