Chester Zoo Members Day News Snippets

I'm presuming Leia is probably pregnant too, whether they know it or not..;) Maybe even 'Martha' too?- it is quite possible for a past breeder like her to successfully have another even at her age.

We can hope, plus it might mean them having to build phase 2 of RoRA to give them the enclosure thet deserve. :D

I reckon they need more than a few Orangutan babies to develop the 2nd phase of ROTRA-like a big input of money.... Also as the Borneans have proved relatively inactive even in the new setting, maybe they are having second thoughts anyway?

If they have too many, it will become difficult to construct because of housing them all while construction is taking place.

Do you think the borneans may be moved on if there numbers get too high?

I'm fairly sure the zoo isn't near it's capacity in regards to the Borneans. Without Donna and Sibu, the zoo can use the old island again as well as the sections of the old house.

As far as I can tell, the 3 females have access to one netted enclosure and i presume one old indoor area, Tuan I also presume has access to the other netted enclosure and an indoor area and that leaves one outdoor area and 2 (or is it 3?) indoor areas which are currently unoccupied.

*this may be incorrect, this is just what I presume is the current scenario*

Iznee is a male anyway, so will be moved onto another collection at some point in the future considering each of the existing females is related to him in someway

The capacity has been talked about before at about 15 orangutans.

In the old days Chester had a larger number of Bornean orangs than they do now, but gradually reduced it to the current three females and one male. Even if another infant(or two) is born, and another unrelated male or pair added that would still only give a total of about 8 animals and there is plenty of room for segragating males etc.

Pertinax, please predict when I will go to Paignton and have some nice weather.

sorry, I can only predict Animal Births, Deaths and Transfers..... But just to make you feel worse, I've been to Paignton many times and I don't ever remember a rainy day....:)

I would like to make it clear that it does not rain all the time at Paignton! It hasn't rained properly since bongorob's visit on Saturday ( a few drops overnight) and it's very pleasant today.
Regarding the abundance of orang births at Chester, maybe they could pass on some tips to Paignton's quartet?

A good balanced group that get on together at a rough guess.

Elephant news:
- Birma has settled well into her new home (See Birma thread)
- Sithami confirmed pregnant, Jangoli almost certainly also pregnant, but not far enough along for lab confirmation. Thi mated last week.
- Nurnberg are getting 2 elephants, including one from Chester. Probably Tunga, since a deal has been done to relocate him, and negotiatons are going on to place Raman. It'll be a shame to see the group of 3 playful youngsters broken up, but I suppose it's necessary to allow the next generation to come along.
- Jangoli's tail used to be manipulated and have cream applied when there was a hands-on system of elephant keeping. Since the protected contact scheme was put in place, that hasn't been possible, which led to her kinked tail atrophying and dying off. She has since been trained to present her tail to the keepers for it to be cleaned and dressed.

I think that's it...!

Is Tunga still supposed to be going to Numremburg? is Sithami still pregnant?
