Chester Zoo Members' Day

A little bit of animal news. Not much is happening at Chester at the moment.

Green Wood Hoopoes are now in the first upstairs aviary, the end aviary now houses the Red-headed Barbets.

Grevy's Zebras have the old oryx paddock, and the oryx the old zebra paddock. The male Scimitar-horned Oryx is in the offshow enclosure by the cheetahs.

0.1 Tawny Frogmouth has arrived from London, to be paired with the Chester male. The breeding female from previous years is on her on, next door is her 2010 hatched son. Not sure if they are leaving Chester or not.

A female Brown Wood Owl is being sought in exchange for one of the Chester males.

Any news Mammal wise?I keep hoping to see a post saying"The Philippine Crocodiles have had young"but nothing yet have they even been introduced or mated before? And Rob do you mean on her own;)?

I think most people are waiting until next week's walk and talk for mammal info, hence there's a lot of focus on birds and reptiles. All I managed to find out yesterday mammal-wise (old news, but not seen it reported) is that the female cheetah 'Adaze' is now out of quarentine and has been for about 6 weeks, but she hasn't been mixed yet. I got a couple of pictures of her from a distance since we were in a bit of a hurry, so didn't go down to the Yurt where I could have got some nicer pics no doubt :).

I'm updating my blog as we speak, but I have images I want to get approved before publishing it so it may be a little longer than expected, but hopefully not too long :)

p.s. - As much as I wanted to be the guy in the second picture because I imagine a great close up would have been possible, I'm also glad I took the photo that way since the interaction seems to make a nice effect.

As far as I am aware Adaze has been introduced to one of the two Brothers(Burbah/Singah). I am not sure how this has got on but that was the last I heard. I have yet to see her but to be fair I dont think she can/will replace KT for me at least.

Ahhh, I was told by either a keeper or presenter that she hadn't been introduced when I asked yesterday :s.

Mammals bred 5 dwarf mongoose, meerkats (forgot how many).

3 Roan antelope have arrived, I expect they are all females.

The gate dividing the crocodiles was open early in March, that's all I know. I forgot to talk to a reptile keeper.

Yes I mean she is on her own.

Nice to catch up with a few zoochatters, probably not surprising to have missed a few more and didn't let being blanked by one spoil our day:)

It could easily have been me (and I apologise immediately if it was). I was walking round the zoo with an eye on the sun, an eye on my watch (determined not to miss the otter's keeper at noon and then to get to the bears when the light was better) with both eyes also looking for new camera angles.

No it wasn't any of you; well LeeMac might have blatently turned his back on us but I've no idea what you look like so was not upset :)

We were lucky though, we had a surprise (only about 4 people there) giant otter feeding!
