Mixed Exhibit with Sugar Gliders

Hello everyone!

I was wondering if any of you can post some species lists of mixed exhibits, where Sugar Gliders are being housed together with other species (any kind)?

I'm researching the options for a mixed exhibit, where Gliders are housed together with other species, and some information from other zoo's would be of great help! I've placed this thread under 'General Discussion' and was advised to place it on the Australian forum. I'd appreciate some real examples from different zoo's.

Thanks! Nick.

I have seen numerous mixed exhibits with this species including: Spotted cuscus, Red flying fox, Tawny frogmouth, various bettongs and potoroos, Brushtail possum.

Thanks tetrapod, great information!!! Do you have any idea whether the Tawny Frogmouths may pose any danger to the gliders?

Nick getting Tawny Frogmouths in Netherlands might be a bit of a challenge (although not impossible).

Hi DDcorvus! Indeed, it won't be easy to come by a pair of Tawny Frogmouths, but I thought of getting them in the US and have them imported, though right now it still is only a thought. If I were to get them, I'd go for breeding. Now, I'm not certain that would be possible with Sugar Gliders around… :) Do you keep any animals?

I have a small collection, although sugargliders are not a part of it anymore (my focus is on birds). If you want to breed with Frogmouths I would not keep them with the gliders. They for sure will prey on the eggs and the young birds.
Getting the birds from the US is an option but will be complicated (there is only one accredited exporter in the US that can export birds to the EU) and expensive.

So on the mainland, but there are only very few of them in private hands. Next to that they are being bred but not in large quantities. If you want as a private keeper to get them it is not impossible, but it will need some time, a bit of luck and a bit of money.

Of course! If there's one thing I've learnt about animal keeping and being a 'private collector' so to say, is that nothing is impossible! You need to do a lot of research, network your way around and of course be ready to pay… ;) You mentioned something about only one US exporter which is accredited to export to the EU, who is it? Do they have a website?

One more thing I was wondering about, is whether you know anything about import/export regulations from the UK to NL. As zoogiraffe mentioned, there might be some available birds in the UK, though I don't know how easy that is to import them here (say I pick them up with a car? ;) )

On a different issue, I was wondering if we're allowed to communicate in Dutch here? (I realize that by doing so most members will be prevented from taking part in this forum…)

Nick send me a private message about what you are planning. And also a bit of your experience with birds (especially softbills). You can write me in Dutch.
