Sadly, I killed my fair share of them last month driving back from Brownsville. But, to this day, I claim it was their fault. They flew right into my car windshield.

The situation at the Reserva de la mariposa Monarca in Michoacan is very difficult now. I recently reviewed some research carried out there and this is the situation. Rural Michoacan has been badly affected by a violent war between two rival narc cartels. Ecoturism has dropped drastically, since the much of the area is considered unsafe for tourists. As a result poor farmers have returned to illegal logging, even within the protected area of the monarch butterfly sanctuary. The Reserva de la Mariposa Monarca is considered a priority area by mexican conservationists, but the situation is very very hard.
