AdelaideNow... Monarto Zoo's 'fiery' king dies

THE dominant lion at Monarto Zoo has died.

Levi, 9, died last Wednesday, Zoos SA spokeswoman Emily Rice said yesterday.

The zoo was waiting for results of an autopsy and blood tests from their vets before announcing his cause of death. They would not comment on whether the lion died as a result of a snakebite.

The zoo said Levi had undergone numerous tests and X-rays after losing his appetite and becoming dehydrated last week. When he was not able to raise himself on Wednesday morning, a vet team operated and removed his enlarged spleen. He did not survive the night.

Levi was the dominant male in Monarto's pride and was described as having a "fiery personality".

The autopsy results are expected today.

Levi didn't die from a snake bite but from a torn esophagus, cause unknown. A great loss. Leroy has been pining for him. Very sad to see.
