Yorkshire Wildlife Park More Construction

Hi,
According to the zoo's planning permission, the zoo development is split up into phase one and phase two.

Phase one is mostly what has happened already but baboons, a new restaraunt (south american themed) ,African rhino, giant ant eaters, Barbary macaques and giraffes are still to come!

Phase two uses the area south of the zoo, to the right of the main entrance drive. It will include Asian rhino, an ampitheatre, two new restaruaunts, an asian hoofstock exhibit, and great apes (not specified which type of ape)

:D:D:D:D:D:D

Interesting - I would say likely candidate for the great ape would be orang as it fits in with the idea it's all Asian species for Phase 2, with Phase 1 being Africa and S. America.

If it would be an Orangutan that would hopefully mean YWP would receive Sumatrans instead of, the more 'common' Bornean's which are in most collections which hold Orang's with only Chester in the UK holding Sumatrans and if include Jersey in the UK they hold them too. :p

If so, they are choosing the Great Ape species for which it is hardest to provide a top-quality environment. Given the relative lack of woodland on the site it would probably have to be a very artificial-looking enclosure, though that's not necessarily a barrier to doing a good enclosure for them.

I also hope if they do get Orangutans, that they have Sumatrans- there are far too few in the UK (only the three holders, Chester & Jersey + the one young one at MW) but they are readily available from Europe where the two species are kept in roughly equal numbers in zoos. They are also far more active than Borneans and so make a much better display.
