A new study looking at whether the UN Global Biodiversity Framework will reduce extinction risk has found that, while the measures (such as reducing pollution and expanding protected areas) will benefit some species, up to 57% will need a more targeted, hands-on approach to stave off extinction.

Such targeted measures include breeding in zoos, reintroduction to the wild, population relocation and vaccination campaigns, among others.

The study was based on 7,784 species listed as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered, with some 4,428 species still at significant risk of extinction even if all eight of the UN Global Biodiversity Framework were implemented and achieved completely.

A median of 54 threatened species per country require targeted conservation, and most countries of the world have such species.

An article about the research can be found here:
More than half of today's threatened species need targeted interventions to stave off extinction
