Just like several other zoochatters who have shared their journeys
with us, I'm going to share my adventures with you. In a few weeks,
I'll be heading for Germany (which, of course, is not very far from
the Netherlands) and in particular to Walsrode on a three-day zoo trip.

Day 1: drive to Walsrode, visiting NaturZoo Rheine
Day 2: visiting Weltvogelpark Walsrode
Day 3: visiting Weltvogelpark Walsrode, leaving early to head home.

In the original plan, we would visit Osnabrück on or way to Walsrode
but as we need to check in at our hotel before 6 pm, it woud leave too
little time to visit Osnabrück. Consequently, we decided to skip Osnabrück
and visit Rheine instead.

At this point, we have nothing planned for the evenings in Walsrode,
so any recommendations are welcome. Also, I would certainly like
to know where 'hidden treasures' (especially rare species of animal)
can be found in Rheine or Walsrode, or the parts I can't afford to miss.
Having read many threads on the Weltvogelpark, I already know
quite a lot about the bird park, so any tips on Rheine are especially
welcome.

After my visits, I will share my opinion on both zoos.

Rheine is a very good choice. Highlights are, among others, the successful gelada breeding, the mixed species exhibit of Indian sloth bears and European golden jackals, the single African wolf / Egyptian jackal specimen, the Cuban hutias and Western sitatungas. All in all, a nice little zoo. Wait for the mass feeding of free-ranging White storks.

Rheine is a realy nice zoo, was there last year ( see pictures at the Gallery ). Didn't see the African wolf nor the Golden jackals :(.
As said by Batto the Gelada enclosures are real good and I liked also the Bird-house and the Penguin / Inca tern enclosure but also the rest of the zoo is high-standard !
Wish you a nice time at both Rheine and Walsrode, which also seems to be pretty good ;) !

The African wolf was in a cage next to the outdoor enclosure of the lion-tailed macaques back in 2012, but I am not sure what the current situation is...

Thanks everyone, I'll certainly take some effort in finding the African wolf.

Vogelcommando, what are the highlights in the birdhouse?
