The Mull Aquarium, which is Europe's first catch-and-release aquarium*, will be closed for the entirety of 2024 while the aquarium is moved to a bespoke new home. This is because of issues relating to the current building, which makes drainage difficult and could affect the integrity of the tanks. The new aquarium should hopefully open in 2025.

The statement can be read below:

* The aquarium only displays animals collected from the shores of Mull, and they are released after a maximum of four weeks on-display.

Mull Aquarium has now released a statement that the planned move to a bespoke new move will not happen, and there are no plans to pursue reopening the site. It has come after the plans were costed, and it was found that the creation of the new facility would have costed £1.04 million. The Tobermory Harbour Association that ran the aquarium has decided that the money is better spent maintaining the harbour itself.
