Inspired by @TinoPup & @ChunkyMunky pengopus to first visit and catalogue every establishment in south-central Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula that either exhibits live animals or displays collections of wildlife specimens (natural history displays open to the public and outdoors stores/local outfitters); and secondly to provide a species list for the “zoo” establishments. (Not including pet stores where I might really bump up the freshwater and salt water fish numbers).

So here you go:

Muskox Farm, Palmer, Alaska (June 2022):
Muskox
- White-faced and Greenland subspecies
Total: 79 animals

Reindeer Farm, Palmer, Alaska (June 2022)*
Domestic Reindeer ~ 64 observed of 120 animals on-site. (Lapland)
Domestic Red Jungle Fowl ~ 8 (various breeds)
Domestic Turkey ~ 2 (Narragansett)
Bison ~ 1
Moose ~ 2
Domestic Rabbit ~ 2 (unsure of breed, but morphologically, except for the color pattern of one, very similar to the European Rabbit).
Domestic Horse ~ 8 (various breeds)
Domestic Canid ~ 1 (Shetland Sheepdog)
Domestic Aurochs ~ 3 (Highland Cow)
Domestic Yak ~ 2
Domestic Vicuña ~ 4 (Alpaca)
Domestic Guanaco ~ 1 (Llama)
Wapiti/Elk ~ 4
Domestic Boar ~ 2 (pot-bellied and Kunekune)

*just having a bit of fun acknowledging the breed’s wild ancestors. I know a lot of you do not count domestics by species…I do, although not generally by breed except for cattle.

Shoot, I find that at a lot of zoos these days if you don’t count the domestics you don’t have any of the representative prey species of the large predators (usually multiple species of large cat and wild canid) on display. It’s a quirk of mine where that balance, of lack of, can enhance or degrade my experience visiting a zoo.

Does the Muskox Farm have two large herds of the two subspecies, or are they further divided?
