Marwell Wildlife My Marwell observations

Judging from News in Breif, the update board will be moved to the top end of Aridlands, so you see it when you step out of Cafe Graze. ;)

Visit Saturday 24 April 2010

Hi,

Just returned from Marwell Wildlife and have just seen the new baby giraffe born to mother Matilda and father Kismet.

She was born last Monday.

She is very cute and was out on the hard standing with her mother and the other pregnant giraffe Makeda while the house was being cleaned out.

She was a bit unstable on her feet as she walked around. Not unusual for a giraffe so young.

Once the house was clean they were aloud back in and the new born female sat down for a power nap.

I returned later to find her again taking a power nap.

I will post some pictures later tonight.

All the other giraffes were in the African Valley.

Aww beautiful baby! I saw her on Wednesday, she must only have been 2 days old. She looks like she's doing good! :D Good luck to the baby, Matilda and of course Expectant Makeda.

Hi Deviant*Strain,

When I spoke to one of the keepers yesterday they seemed happy with her progress and Matilda was doing a good job in looking after her.

As you say lets hope Makeda's birth goes well as well and hope she is happy to look after her first born when it happens.

Any idea how this giraffe breeding relates to building up a pure-bred herd of Rothschildt's giraffe at Marwell?

Why are hybrid giraffe still being produced?

Matilda is Marwell's only pure rothschilds cow, so don't worry, this is the first of hopefully many pure births. :) Two more pure cows will be arriving soon to increase the breeding numbers.

New baby giraffe
We are celebrating the birth of our first pure bred Rothschild giraffe. Keepers have named the new addition Nsia, which means ‘the sixth born child’ in Akan, a language spoken in Ghana, west Africa. Pronounced ‘nseeah’, the name is very apt as she is the sixth calf born to her mother, Matilda.

Giraffes are the tallest land animals in the world. When Nsia was born (5.30pm on Monday 19 April) she was already standing 6ft tall and weighing around 120lb (55 kilos). She will stay close to her mother for the next few months and will take several years to reach the lofty heights of Matilda, who stands at 14ft.

Nsia can be seen with her parents and the rest of the giraffe herd at Marwell Wildlife, which also includes Christa, Matilda’s previous calf. Section Manager, Ian Goodwin said: “We are all excited by the birth of our first pure bred Rothschild giraffe and hope Nsia’s arrival is the first of many.”

Nsia’s arrival represents a significant milestone towards the conservation of this endangered sub-species. Both Nsia’s parents, Matilda and Kismet, are pure bred Rothschild’s giraffes, a sub-species of giraffe that are in danger of extinction. It is believed that there are only around 600 Rothschild giraffes left in a few protected areas in Kenya and in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda.

There is only one species of giraffe, with nine currently recognised sub-species. The different sub-species can be identified by their different patterns and also from where they originate from in Africa. Rothschild giraffes can be easily distinguished from other giraffes by their white socks and darker centres to their brown patches.
