They are basically Clubs for Children, They take part in fundraising activities and meet ups and discuss issues about the zoo.
This is quite common in larger zoos and safari parks.
For instance I was a member of the Junior Board about 4 years ago at Woburn for quite a number of years (about 3/4 I think).
It looks like the Oryx club is the younger group and the Gemsboks is the older group.
It gives the kids a chance to be slightly involved and do something for the park for instance at Woburn we would choose a cause, which could be the EAZA campaign of the year or a particular section of the Park and we would help fundraise so do a sponsered Walk or do some sort of activity within the Park to raise money.

Yep, that sort of thing. At Marwell the oryx club is divided into three groups, the Juniors for 4-8 year olds, the Seniors for 9-12 year olds and the Gemsboks for 13-16 year olds. The choice after that is that you may become a volunteer at 18, but we're trying to work out a halfway stage for 17 year olds, as a couple of gemsboks are already that age and quite a few very near to it. :p I joined when I was seven, and I fondly remember my first meeting been Bill Hall talking about poo!
It's a really fun get-together for a couple of hours each third sunday, and it's definately better in the gemsboks. There's just over a dozen of us, and we all get on really well. We're also more independent given our age, doing more 'important' things, be it a talk from a high-up official or helping out the younger ones. We've got some great things lined up for the 2010 calender, and seeing as technically it's my last year in the club it shoud be. :D A lot of former oryx club members have gone on to be keepers, conservationists, etc., even one or two of Marwell's keepers were members I think, and there's many people in the Gemsboks who are planning a similar career path to mine, so as well as a great social get-together it's a fantastic starting place. :)

What a lovely club.:) I've been to Marwell Zoo twice and I think its a very good zoo for what it holds. I'll have to visit again soon.

Does anyone know anything about the Snow Leopards that were supposed to be arriving mid-January? Have they postponed the move due to the weather or are things going ahead as planned?

They've put a partition in the middle of the enclosure, but Yasmin can still access both sides, or at least she could on the 30/12/09.

Nothing yet: The weather will have definately had impact on movements, meaning it's possible that Zambar might be leaving later than planned. I've got an oryx club meeting next Sunday, so I'll check things out then.

With a bit of luck, if the busses are going to Marwell again, I shall be visiting Marwell tomorrow for the first time in months. :)
