  • Melbourne Zoo, Royal Park, Victoria, Australia... Which was my 'home zoo' before I moved to BNE... Been there many many times.
  • Adelaide Zoo, Adelaide, SA, Australia, once, when I was priveleged enough to see 'inside' the bird exhibit. They have fantastic birds there.
  • Taronga Zoo, Mosman, NSW, Australia, Once, gee, they are right about 'start at the top and work down...'
  • Healesville Sanctuary, Healesville, Victoria, Australia, Love this one too, all Aussie animals.
  • Australia Zoo, Beerwah, QLD, Australia, Steve has done a good job.
  • Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Currumbin, QLD, Australia, when I was about 15.
  • Sea World, Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, Last year with the kids.
  • Werribbe Park Zoo, Werribee, Australia, Fantastic Zoo, used to take the kids for a ride on the zoo bus on weekends... Love those Giraffes..
  • Moscow Zoo, Moscow, Russia, (in 1987) I cried and cried about how poorly the animals were treated.

    Plus lots of private aquariums and Bird collections which could be described as zoos... :)

My list is a bit (read , lot) shorter than your list, but enjoyed them at the time.
Taronga Park - many times
Currumbin Bird Sanctuary - many times
Quite a few smaller displays over the years that probably don't even exist now.
Problem is, the 'kids' are now older so we stopped going :confused: BUT we now have a grand daughter :D so we have a good excuse to start over again.

My list is:

Taronga Zoo, NSW, Australia, I've been there twice and it is a long walk around.

Sea World, QLD, Australia, Been once, but it looks like a second visit will be this Christmas.

mmmm Other than that, I went to the London Zoo many years ago.

Looking at the list of zoos is very interesting, I didnt know there were so many. :)
 
My list is even shorter:

- National Zoo and Aquarium (Canberra) on several occasions

- Sydney Aquarium (Darling Harbour) once - but my partner and I are now Aqua Club members so we can (and we intend to) visit often at no cost.

I would really like to see Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

I can highly recommend it.

If you can, consider staying at ZooFari Lodge - you get access to the zoo over two days, meals provided, behind the scenes tours (the best bit !), and you sleep in a safari tent (with heated terazzo tile floors !) so close to the lions, you can hear them snoring.

my zoo review...

okay and heres mine.....

AUSTRALIA
Melbourne Zoo - biggest and most diverse animal collection in australia. at least half of the entire zoo is redeveloped under the zoo's masterplan.

Werribee Open Range Zoo - great infrustructure and exhibit design there, a good blend of safari tour and walking trails. love the african floodplain, but it just needs more exhibits you can see at yur own pace.

Healesville Sanctuary - Overseas tourists just love this zoo! needs a new reptile house though.

Taronga Zoo - potentially the most attractive zoo in the world, but i think they suffer from "mock rock" syndrome and are lagging behind a bit on the modernising.

INDOCHINA
Saigon Zoo - melbourne zoo are trying to help this place get on its feet. personally id'e try and close it down. suffers from uninspired, lazy staff (though they are probably paid a pittence) and some of the most shameful cages i've ever seen. impressive collection, but many of the animals are neglected and unwell. worst zoo i've ever been to.

Endangered Primate Rescue Centre (EPRC) - considering vietnam has so many critically endangered endemic primates it is heartwarming to see something so positive is being done about it. located inside cuc phong national park, the EPRC rescues rare langurs, gibbons and loris' (not macaques) and slowly pairs them up for breeding with other members of the same species. although the cages are pretty uninspiring, the animals get absolute expert care from a dedicated team of foriegn and vietnamese keepers. their is also two very large semi-wild fenced in sections of jungle where they attempt to condition some of the more successfully bred animals back into the wild. you may only visit with a guide and are not allowed to make much noise or get close to the cages. among the inhabitants are all three species of douc langur (though the black shanked has no girlfriend at the moment and mated with a grey-shanked instead!) and the world's rarest monkey - the cat ba langur. only 50 are throught to survive on cat ba island in vietnams north and (un)fortunately both a male and female were brought into the centre within months of eachother. the pair successfully produced one male offspring and then the male got bitten by a snake and died!! at the time of visiting the infant was still very small and i was told that as the centre hopes another is never brought in they will either try to breed mother and son (a very short -term solution) or try to teach the pair to live in the wild again. fantastic place with the most gorgeous monkeys i have ever seen.

Chang Mai Zoo - this is an absolutely huge zoo, built on a massive forested mountaintop and most (seals and penguins excluded) animals are in very large, green encolsures. you often require the services of a bus to get around. would have liked to have seen the gibbons in better enclosures and this zoo could be awesome if it had some good management and creativeness injected into it. it is however, one of the only zoos in the world with a pair of giant pandas!!!

Dusit Zoo - bangkok's main zoo, green and shady, dusit unfortunately has a bit of a fairground experience attatched to it. lots of noise pollution blasts around you in what could otherwise be an okay zoo. much improvemnts since my first visit, most of the animals i was concerend about now have new, spacious encosures. they have some pretty rare animals there such as red-shanked douc langurs, so i wish they would just lose the noisy fairground in the park!! great bird collection.

INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT

Darjeeling Zoo - set high up in the indian himalayas, i was positively supprised at the good care the animals at this zoo recieved. focusing entirely on himalayan fauna (with the exception of some gorgeous siberian tigers in a massive enclosure) it is also the home of the snow leopard breeding centre. the cats enjoy the priavcy of very large, forested cages and the program is quite sucessful. among the breeding sucess' are an awfully large colony of nepalese red pandas. i only wish some orginisation would sponser this zoo, the staff seemed very dedicated and the animals are well looked after in a country that has some shocking cases of animal cruelty. among the small collection are mountain ungulates, black bears, tibetian wolves, leopards and birds.

Dehiwala Zoo - okay here was a supprise. who would have throught the war-torn country of sri lanka would have one of the best zoos in asia? back in the days of gerald durell, this zoo was quite world famous for its elephant presentations (including the most elegant pair of africans i have ever seen). it also runs the pinawalla elephant orphanage (actually an amazing free-range breeding and rescue centre for some 60-odd sri lankan elephants) and has an outstanding collection and many decent exhibits. the downside is, i think this zoo has too many animals. you often find repeats of the same species, leopards and sloth bears for example, and whilst some members of a species live in a renovated exhibit, others pace it out in old-style bear pits and concrete boxes. someone needs to take some of these guys off their hands! supprisingly the orangutans, so often neglected in zoos had an exhibit better than the one at taronga!

SOUTH AMERICA
Forest of Science - though tecnically not a zoo, this tiny remnant patch of rainforest left in the middle of the amazonian city of manaus has effectively become just that. they do however have some animals enclosed and being cared for among them, (my purpose for visiting) the most beautiful little creatures i have ever seen - amazonian manatees. the centre here has three good sized pools for caring for the orphaned and rescued sea cows (they have at least 10 tiny little ophaned calves we bottle-fed there at the time of visiting) and have recently bred them for the first time in captivity. a lot of research goes into studying the animals. as well as heaps of wild free-ranging agouti, macaws, toucans and monkeys, they care for a small group of giant otters in a series of pens.

Buenos Aires Zoo - this zoo tries hard but it is really quite dull indeed. the worst exhibits are actually some of the newest and suffer from a serous lack of creativeness in design. the brand new and overcrowded seal pool is absolutely tiny. the equally new reptile house features badly lit, filthy, anattractive enclosures and the whole zoo is doing nothing exciting with its gardens whatsoever. for a zoo that appears to have a fair amount of money it such a shame to see it wasted on such badly designed new exhibits. needs a makeover. totally unmemorable.

id'e love to visit more australian zoos, in particular western plains, i hear thats awesome.

*I used to go to Birmingham Nature Centre often as a kid. Back then it housed mainly native or once-native fauna, including owls, red squirrels, beavers, otters, ravens, fallow deer, lynx and wolf. These days it appears to be changing to a collection of more exotic endangered species such as red pandas, lemurs, cranes, Pere David deer and the ubiquitous meerkats and short-clawed otters.
