A planning application has been submitted for a wildlife park at Compton Greenfield.

The National Wildlife Conservation Park, the first of its kind in the country, is being built by Bristol Zoo at the Hollywood Tower Estate.

Due to open in 2012, the £70 million park will offer a 21st century approach to zoos, housing animals in settings close to their natural habitat.

The plans for the National Wildlife Conservation Park will be available shortly to view on-line at Home - South Gloucestershire Council

It really does look amazing.

This is a step forward for this, I wonder whether they will need to do the junction improvements before they can start work or they will go hand in hand with the new development.
 
I hope they have the finance already in place for the development , if not raising it could now be very tricky .

I have been saying exactly the same thing too (see other thread). I fear for this development, and the proposed Biota aquarium too.
 
I may be getting cranky, but I don't like the way places brand themselves as 'National'. Why should Bristol zoo's new venture be National? Why do we have a National Sea Life Centre and a National Marine Aquarium? At one time Chester billed its elephant house as the National Elephant Breeding Centre.
We've given Twycross lots of stick for calling itself The World Primate Centre (as well as for other things) and this is the same sort of thing.
Don't get me wrong, I like the plans and I very much hope that they will go ahead. But please lets fight the hype and ask for it to become the Avon Wildlife Conservation Park or something like that.

Yes, the 'National Sea Life Centre', and 'National Seal Sanctuary'...also spring to mind in annoyance.

Great for promotion. In Australia we have Australia Zoo and National Zoo. Are either major zoos? Hmmm...

At least the Bristol proposal seems to be very different from anything else in the UK, and quite innovative and exciting.
 
Here in Canada anything that is National in the way of Conservation is funded by the Federal Government. If it is funded by the Provincial Government then it is a Provincial Park or Conservation Area. Does that apply in the UK?
I couldn't find the information on the new National Wildlife Park, could someone point me in the right direction please on that web site.:) Thanks
 
In the US, we have the National Aviary (in Pittsburgh, PA) and the National Aquarium (in Baltimore, MD) Both of these facilites are "national" only be decree of the US congress. I dont think any substantial amount of money has been allotted to these facilities by the government. The decree is ment to make these institutions an example by which to follow. Maybe this is how Bristol views the naming of its new conservation park...


PS, we do have the national zoo in washington dc along with another national aquarium in dc. These facilites have/do receive funds from the US congress. Thus, another way by which to bestow the title of "National."
 
It is very misleading- and an incorrect description. The only 'National' zoological collection in the Uk is ZSL.

What or how are we classing what should be called a 'Natinal' collection?

Government funding? Is the only way I would class it as a 'Natinal' collection, as it would be paid for by us.
