Glasgow Zoo (Closed) Nature Sanctuary and Dog Rescue on old Glasgow Zoo Land

Hi there!

I'm part of a group who are in the process of contacting Glasgow City Council in the hopes of getting what is left of the old Glasgow Zoo land to clean it up, run a rescue and nature reserve, and incorporate the history of the zoo in our mission.

We currently have a Facebook Page and a Petition set up to hopefully show the Council that our idea has public support.

I would be very thankful for any signatures I get from this site and would be interested to hear your thoughts on this, wither you think its a good idea, or not.

You would be best contacting the zoological society for west of Scotland, who ran the zoo, the land is nothing whatsoever to do with Glasgow City Council and if you contact the land registrar they will confirm as to what areas is still owned or not.

There is also the Dogs Trust less than a quarter of a mile away, in what was the old grey-hound racing track. Glasgow City Council do not "own" the land which is still undeveloped by Miller Homes. In the main, you will find that the city council, the city fathers, will not sanction any help due to the conflict of interest for the DT, MH, the local areas of population, the trouble that the area has with gangs and gang warfare.

kibble2013; could you please remove the pictures from your FB page regarding the zoo, especially those from zoochat and from elsewhere. You have not asked for permission and copyright is held on many such pictures. I have such copyright and also make some of my living from those pictures. It would have been respectful and courteous if you asked in the first place. Therefor, it would be nice if you could remove the pictures from your FB page and Petition, thanks.
 
The land that you are seeking was never owned by Glasgow City Council for the sole use of the zoo. Your petition and FB page is somewhat misleading and copying or using pictures without consent and permission will get you into a great deal of trouble. Have you sought copyright permission from the zoochat and other internet users? No...hence why you were warned to remove copied pictures.
 
Apart from copyright issues … I am not exactly jumping up and down over the plan to site a sanctuary and rescue facility on the old Glasgow Zoo land. It is also owned by the Society is it not …

Plus I think there have been plans to re-start or there have been rumors to that effect some time ago.

Perhaps BCS can enlighten us ...
 
This "plan" of a dog rescue center and nature reserve is not only flawed but also lacking in any credible action plan and ethos.

Aside from the fact that this group o person copied photographs from zoochat and other internet sites without gaining permission or sought to find permission, then the credit of any such plan must be seen as daft and foolish.

Kibble2013 has posted on FB saying that "Edinburgh Zoo" own the land which Glasgow Zoo sat in....that is utter fantasy and total hogwash. It is a fact that the Zoological Society for West of Scotland (Glasgow Zoo) passed on the land to Edinburgh Zoo and was ad is held in "trust" and because it is held in "trust" Edinburgh Zoo cannot legally sell it, pass it on or do anything whatsoever with the land until all the members of the Zoological Society for West Scotland have their say, whether they are dead or alive. The reason it is held in trust is due to laws pertaining to a charity in Scotland as well as land laws and other legal issues.

Apart from such a stupid idea of a "dog rescue center" when just a few hundred yards from the old zoo site is the Dogs Trust and SSPCA, which is doing a sterling job. What is so daft is the utter lack of good research from the start.

Glasgow City Council do not own the land, Edinburgh Zoo not own the land, the land is held in "trust".

The ground and footprint of total area requires such a huge amount of funds to clean up that we are talking a few millions of pounds. The ground is contaminated and has mine shafts and land which is classed as being unstable, some mines have no measurements due to the depth (the area was mined for coal). There is a small river running by, so flood protection must be applied, again at the cost of millions of pounds. Miller homes had to have numerous "under-pining" works done to the land to make it safe to build on.

Overall, such a plan to have a dog rescue center and nature sanctuary without any credible research and without even obtaining who owns the land to the very basic of obtaining "legal status" for a project of this size is just pure nonsense. From not becoming a trust themselves, with a constitution, from having legal advice to that of showing any viable and credible research. In other words....it stinks and comes out as a fraud!

Will this project work or even come close to being realized? NO, no and no.
 
I looked on the facebook page and decided not to sign the petition as there is no explanation at all of who these people are and what their experience is-what makes them suitable to be running a nature reserve or a dog rescue? And why the combination of dog rescue and nature reserve? There is far too little information provided about anything to get my support at this stage, and that was before I saw the copyright issues etc on here. Kibble, if you come back, I don't think it is necessarily a bad idea but I think you need to come up with a more detailed plan and be more open about who you are and what your long term intentions are before you will convince many people to support you.

So what,therefore,happened to the Zoological Society for the West of Scotland which DID own the site and met in the adjacent pub/hotel(Black Bear?) until a few years ago? If the land is being sold,who gets the money? The original societys debts were cleared with the first land sale many years ago.Odd.
 
It is a bit of a strange situation, certainly - I suspect we will never hear the exact truth behind what has gone on regarding the ownership of this land, if indeed it *is* true that ownership has passed to RZSS and thence on to developers.
 
Of those members of the Society which had Glasgow Zoo, in what is most likely just to be a couple who are still living as most were either semi or full retired and well into their later years. The Society being a Scottish Charity and governed by Scottish Charity Law, along with the land which was held in trust by Edinburgh Zoo. It would be most interesting to ascertain what will happen to any monies left over? However, I do have to agree with TeaLovingDave on the issue of if it "is" true as well as Tim Brown. It would be very interesting to aquire the paper work from Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator, Audit Scotland as well as Edinburgh Zoo and those that are still left and living from the Glasgow Zoo management and to find out what did happen!

Interesting....very interesting! (the charity extract shows yearly low figures and then high figures, that i do find odd) Thanks for letting us see this.
 
Well at least the RZSS will get the money,but its a strange outcome and I still think a nice little zoo could have been created with the remaining land-presumably the RZSS had good feasibility reasons for not doing that,and anyone else taking it on would have been pure and simple competition.As for a dog sanctuary...well no thanks.when are the bunny-huggers going to wake up to the real crisis facing the worlds wildlife and commit themselves to a REAL cause?

There is probably more money to be gained outside Tesco's with a tin and a dog on a leash for a local cause than standing with a person dressed in a tiger suit doing the same for an Indian one. Ideally they should be handing out condoms if they want to save the planet.
charities can be a good little earner.
