Hi, I was wondering if someone who has some experience in the area of resumes for zoos would be able to help me out ?

My local zoo currently has a few openings and I really want to have my resume give me the best chance at getting in, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is it o.k to post my resume here ? Or should I keep it private ?

I think if you want to post your resume here then that is up to you but remove any very personal details (name etc). But it would be better if people wanting to help pm'd you or posted here for you to send your resume to them for some feedback.

I will pm you my email and you can send it to me if you like.

good luck getting input on here from zoo professionals.

My advice would be volunteer at the zoo in question and get to know the situation and ask yourself if you really want to get involved.

there are many zoo professionals on the forum.

I think that Tropikal is a bit sore because none of the zoo professionals on the forum thought it wise to respond to his thread asking for them to discuss their current employment situation and how, in his words, "the industry seems overrun with politics and corruption" :p

yes that was my thinking too which was why I was blunt. I mean, I'm often blunt but sometimes it is purposeful :D

most zoo professionals are people who wont give you advice or even use their real name online.

there may be a very good reason for that.

volunteer and get to know more about the profession, ask them how long they have been working there and look closely at them as they answer.

are they all young, single and healthy, or are most older 40plus and married with children.

some zoos are great places to work and people enjoy career employment with these institutions while others are horrible places that use people like tools and discard them as they become a "liability".....age, children, smokers, injured at work, that kind of thing.

be very careful out there, just like the circus some places are very nice and pretty until you lift up the curtain and see whats really inside.

Can we assume Tropikal is your real name then? My name is Israel which some consider an odd name, but I've never come across someone called Tropikal before.

Can I ask why you bothered to join this forum, apart from obviously trying to stir? I.e., from your profile's biography:
Biography
a small attractive girl looking for a job
Interests
getting kicked off forums
Occupation
digging ditches
Home Zoo
ringling circus

Getting kicked off forums is a hobby? Classic. Sounds like Tropikal has too much time on her hands. ;)

Certainly had time to create a duplicate account differing in name only by the addition of a full stop, immediately after I called them out on asking problematic questions after lurking without a single post for 4 years!

ha, good catch! I completely missed that one.

Need help....

'Tropikal' could be her first name. Second name could be 'Fish'. Or not.

Maybe they got fired or their contract was terminated, hence the recent venting?

I dont use my real name on here for the same reason most other zoo professionals stay "low key"

I changed my name because after I posted the "zoo keepers sound off" topic my account was unable to access the forums. Had I received a notice that I was kicked off than I would not bother to post but the site mods said my account was ok but it still would not work, must be a computer glitch? [smiles]

I get kicked off forums because my topics are controversial so I decided to have fun with the fact. I find it quite enjoyable when people get angry with me for simply asking questions and try to insult and insinuate. Its normal to attack peoples statements if you dont like them and that ok, its the beauty of the internet forums, freedom to express yourself.

ask for my career I have been gainfully employed in the natural science industry for 20 years and am very happy and content with the career I have chosen.

I joined zoo chat years ago and did not post a thing for years because I was busy with work and family, I forgot about the place and just rediscovered it while cleaning out my e-mail.

Thanks for your reply's, I look forward to interacting with such entertaining folks.

So many young folks are trying to get into the business and I wish them luck and hope their dreams come true however the industry is very difficult to deal with if you dont know what your getting into so my advice is to be careful do your research and volunteer.

You don't need to be overly provocative to bring up controversial zoo management issues. If you go through some of the thread archives you'll see that many "hot" topics are discussed, including elephant issues. We have a pretty friendly group here and it sounds like you'll fit right in.

As you note there are many young people on this forum who are interested in and actively pursuing zoo careers. Your wisdom and experience could likely be an asset to them.

Welcome to Zoochat.

News to me ;)

thanks, i appreciate the welcome David, it just seems like I was about to get ganged up on and run out, natural human behavior.

most zoos are great places but there's just a few that give the industry a bad name.

elephants are a terribly difficult situation, I understand the whole position people take with the shows and free contact bullhook management but its been my experience that most programs are really great.

I had an opportunity to tour Tampas bush gardens program and it was AMAZING, the place seems like a cutting edge example of modern elephant management. Many people fear elephants so they wont transfer into the area so its a common entry level position for many zoos since established employees seem to avoid elephants anymore.

I volunteered in an elephant program years ago but found out things were very different once i began working there.
