On June 26, 2018 a new aquarium was opened in Joetsu / Niigata Prefect. The new one replaced the old aquarium which was established in 1980. A special highlight of the new aquarium is the exhibit for magellanic penguins: the aquarium currently houses more than 100 magellanic penguins.
