I was going to ask if you have ever seen the glow worm caves that they mention in the article.
 
I haven't been to Waitomo, but glow-worms are found all over NZ in the forests. They are just more impressive in caves because there is more space for big colonies. They are actually gnat larvae which live in cocoons from which dangle sticky threads. The lights attract other insects which become snared, and the glow-worms then haul up their prize and eat it. (They aren't related in any way to European glow-worms or to fire-flies).
