Hey,

Just thought I would let everyone know that when I went to Chester Zoo today I was shocked to find a 2 day old baby giraffe that was born to Kelly and Thorn. I didnt know any Giraffe's were expecting, the mother seems to be rearing the baby well. Unfortunetly the batterys in my camera went by the time I got to the giraffe section so no pics. Sorry.

Good good, hopefully this will run all smooth the giraffe team.

I wonder if this would delay there move out of chester?

I think the keepers said 'SHE' was 2 days old but that's not 100% that, thats definetly the case. I've only just got interested in the Giraffe's at the zoo why are they being moved out of chester?

Sorry just read back over my post and it doesnt make sence. I was ment to say that, them saying 'she' doesnt mean that is actully the case. Sorry.

Because they are hybrids, Thorn and the new female (Aiofle??) are pure bred.

The breeding program are phasing out hybrid giraffe's in the next few years by moving them all into none breeding situations.

Molly,Margaret, Kelly and the new calf are now known not to be pure rothschild giraffe and will be leaving Chester soon for other zoo's because Chester want to breed pure rothschild. New pure females will replace them. Only the male Thorn and another female called Aofie are pure.

The pure bred Rothschild females are expected early next year now. I forgot to ask when Molly and Margaret are going.

It's probably been mentioned on another thread, but does anyone know where the hybrids are going? Just curious :)

The plan is to hold all hybrid Giraffe`s in a none breeding situation,so they will move to a collection that houses an all female group or a group with a castrated male.

I can confirm the calf is female. Kelly is doing a good job at looking after this calf and she will be slowly introduced to the rest of the herd indoors before venturing out and about.

Plan is to hold a naming competition for her and this will be announced Monday when they have a press day for the new charge.
