Just posted the first pics of new elephant exhibit at Cleveland Zoo. It is a large, well designed and functional exhibit which is a far cry from the old one. While I have been to about 50 zoos around the country and have not seen alot of zoos out west, I would have to say it is one of the best elephant exhibits I have seen. East of the Mississippi I would have to rank it up there with North Carolina and Disney even though those two exhibits are much bigger and are much different exhibits with a more naturalistic display for the animals
There are two large outdoor yards for the public to view the elephants. Right now there are 4 female and 1 large male african elephants. There are also exhibits for meerkats, rock python, mole rats but those are just minor exhibits compared to the elephants.
I like the fact that the zoo used part of the original structure and kept most of the existing topography. Mixed in with this are two large pools for the elephants as well as large spaces to roam. The complex has a large courtyard before you enter the building where the elephants are housed. Good use of materials to make an African looking village without overdoing it.
Kudos to Cleveland Zoo for a 1st class exhibit. Now lets get working on the tiger and bear grottos, ape house and we need a south american exhibit.
