The first open zoo in South East Asia is expected to be opened in Pinnawala, off Rambukkana, in the future. A sum of Rs. 80 million has already been allocated by the Ministry of Public Recreation and Sports to carry out some of the projects associated with this Pinnawala Open Zoo.

These funds would be used to lay an internal road network, erect a parapet wall round the zoo, construct an overhead bridge and build a water distribution unit for the zoo.

The Pinnawala Zoo is expected to be ready for animals by the year 2011. It is expected to be a major tourist attraction in the country. At present, the zoo of Pinnawala is being considered as a priority by the government and the Provincial Council of Sabaragamuwa.

Has anyone more information about this zoo. Because 0,2 lions from here will be sent there (if I heard it correct - but for sure Sri Lanka).

When I visted the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (in April 2012) right in the Pinnawala area they had signs posted up about the "Pinnawala Zoo" in the works, with pictures of all kinds of exotic animals and what the zoo will generally look like when it maybe opens in the future.

I hear it'll be an extension of sorts of the Elephant Orphanage to lure more tourists to the area with its multiple animal attractions.
