The new Orang utan House is open at Dudley Zoo and what an improvement it is on the old thing they had before
The indoor enclosures on both sides are roughly the same a good ground area with plenty of ropes and poles to climb also there is plenty of privacy above the windows.
There is a small second level which leads to the night time enclosure.
There are 2 main windows on each side of the door where you can watch the Orang utans and just as you enter the door in the middle there is another window which allows you to watch only the left hand indoor enclosure.
Please take a look at the pictures I have put on The Gallery (there are 9 more in the comment part)
Other news from around the zoo
New Male Rothchild’s Giraffe has now arrived (08/04/2010) his 9 years old and came from South Lakes.
All three lions are now out in there enclosure together let’s hope for little ones in the future.
Primate house as 2 new arrivals 1 each for the Pygmy Marmoset and Geold’s marmoset the pygmy marmoset was born 13/03/2010 and they’ve named him Scott.
Monkey Tails News there are no longer any Meerkats in the enclosure by the Exit this is now home to a group of African Spurred Tortoise
It appears work as restarted on the restrengthening of the Primate House for new arrivals shortly.

So glad the Orang House is now fully up. Time to sort out the breeding situation too and set up a real breeding group.

Also nice to hear that the new Rothschildt's male is in and now Dudley can be considered a pure-bred potential herd.

Happy to have the spur-thighed tortoises as complimentary inhabs.

I so far haven't heard of the hybrid giraffe being moved off (yet she isn't breeding) so just gotta w8 for a zoo to take her up!

Zoo`s are allowed to keep Hybrid and Pure Giraffes in the same collection,it may have been decided that there is no need to move her to another collection.

Good news about the orang enclosure :D

Is there a 2nd phase planned to now work on the outside enclosures? Will the indoor space be big enough for the orangs to remain inside if during the winter months they do work on the outside parts???

I am planning my summer zoo tour at the moment so may be back :D :p hopefully some work on the Tectons can happen soon they have been waiting as long as the orangs  :p

There are 2 other phases planned the outside to the front (the horrible walls and moat) are planned for a make over this winter along with an extension to the side of the house by the Hunting dogs
Hopefully this will take place in one phase and not 2

Thats good news then Adrian :D lets hope they make a good job of it and not just a lick of paint!

Don't hold your breath Karen!!;) It may be not just one coat of paint, but two!!:D

Apparently the renovation to the House itself was mainly done by the Zoo staff themselves- a pretty formidable undertaking and I think they have done a pretty good job overall. Regarding the outdoors, I think the ugly semicircular 'Urinal' walls at least, are likely to stay, as quite possibly the building wouldn't standup if they took them down. But it remains to be seen how they will turn their skills to improving the outside areas- it will certainly provide a challenge for them.

Thank you for posting the photos. The old Ape House was certainly due for renovation. It has been a very long time since I visited Dudley, so my memory may be at fault, but am I correct in thinking that the internal sections have been enlarged by adding the space that was the public viewing gallery to each one?
Does anyone know how they plan to modify the outdoor sections?

You are correct in thinking that what was the very wide public passageway now forms the animals' main space.

One photo shows a section of the original Gorilla cage, with the same old service door and access ledge and door to the outside, above it, at the back, with an Orangutan in the foreground in what was the visitors area. It looks as if the old public corridor forms the main part of their indoor display area, and the other three(?) original indoor cages have been sealed off from public view by a wall- these are presumably their 'night cages' now and probably still the same as before. There were five indoor cages in total, and I guess maybe the one at each end is open-plan- like the one shown in the photo. This whole indoor area seems to have been divided into two 'show' enclosures.

Its a huge improvement though I'd like to see still more 'mobile' climbing equipment(ropes, swingpoles etc) Apparently the Zoo staff did the major part of this renovation work themselves which is a pretty amazing feat for which they deserve much credit. (Presumably because in these economically difficult times this was the only way to get anything done at a 'poorer' zoo such as Dudley?) I hope they can do something similar with the outdoors too in due course.

i completely agree with out - most work carried out at the zoo is done by the staff...and its amazing wat they do

It's for the arrival of some macques as it stands it would not be able to hold them
It will only be used for quarantine reason's I think they intend to have them outside with the others
