The proposed improvements do not include the one thing they need to add more than anything - a cafe. When I went there, I arrived at lunchtime expecting to eat and then stay for the day. But there is no food service whatsoever.
There is room in the entrance building it seems. It is a large building with nice viewing windows that is practically empty, just a couple static exhibits. Kind of odd walking into this hulking empty space.
Yes, it is for native animals only. It is actually stocked with injured native wildlife that cannot be released. Not nearly as good as the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, but not bad for a quick visit. Definitely worth it if you are in the area. This is one of three small zoos in New Mexico that feature exclusively native wildlife (the others being Spring River Park Zoo and Wildlife West).
