New population of Gouldian Finches discovered

That's good news for a threatened species.

The caption on top photograph is misleading - the bird on the right is indeed a male, but the bird on the left is also a male.

These birds seem to be well represented in aviculture. Why can't those birds be used to boost wild population numbers?
 
aviculturists love the unusual, so quite often mutations become vastly more common than "wild-type" (think budgies, cockatiels, zebra finches, etc). Also simply releasing lots of captive-bred Gouldians doesn't address the reason behind their decline in the first place.
