New species brought to zoos

Hi,

I moaned some time ago that many threatened species are not kept in zoos.

So, which NEW species were brought to zoos outside their home country recently?

I only can think of 3 new mammals brought to Western zoos within last 5 years: Visayan pigs, Balabac mouse deer and Palawan binturong. All are brought thanks to two zoos - Poznan in Poland and RSCC in Kent.

Isn't it terribly little?

Howletts have brought in Heck's macaque recently, also Chester and avifauna in Holland importing Visayan tarictic hornbill.

Toronto took in some Panamanian golden frog a few years ago. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I think they are a newer species. Vancouver Island Marmots are another more recently brought in species, only during the early to mid 2000s, I believe.

I am sure that there have been several more species of amphibian brought into zoos within the last few years for conservation breeding. I suspect that some reptile species that have arrived as Customs confiscations may be new species for zoos as well - perhaps Annamese leaf turtles for example. I'm sure other members here know far more than I do about these species.

Prague have also brought in Slender Mongoose (Galerella sanguinea).

And Hannover have brought in Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus ursinus).

BTW, the female of Checkered Elephant Shrew was not directly imported from its homeland, but was obtained from a german private keeper.

Splendid Leaf Frogs by Manchester Museum, new also at Bristol and Chester.

With a little help from zootierliste;
- Pangolin to Leipzig Zoo
- smooth coated otter to Belfast/RSCC
- Either Northern or Southern Luzon cloudrat, one was imported from Bonx Zoo, the other from the Phillippines.
- Gambian Mongoose (Zoo Zlin-Lesna)
- Red elephant Shrew (Zoo Cologne)
- Giant mole rat (obtained from a university, but new to the zoo world), Osnabruck Zoo
- is the rufous elephant shrew allready at RSCC?
- Four-eyed opossum (Zoo Plzen)
- Southern tree hyrax (Praha Zoo)

There's bound to be quite a few more, but these are the ones i picked up quickly...

Also quite a few species have been brought over from the US, amongst them the yellow-footed rock wallaby (besançon) and spotted-necked otter (Bioparco).

Bioparc Valencia (not Bioparco di Roma) has raised spotted-necked otters (I don't known from where) and red flanked duikers,(from L.A. zoo) the only ones in Europe.

welcome back Sun Wukong! I know not everyone will share the sentiment, but I for one have missed your posts
