new study on mexico-usa jaguarundi

Ok, post one is my listing of the facts as I read them. Post two, which you are reading now, is my opinion of what is happening. (Disclaimer - I have no knowledge of the plan other than what I just read in that article). This whole plan will go nowhere and is a waste of government time and money. Well meaning but misled environmental groups spend their energy filing frivolous lawsuits that do no good for the environment or anyone else (they probably do more harm than good by creating enemies). We have a similar situation here in southern Arizona where a group based in my city (the Center for Biological Diversity) files lawsuits will nilly, lately forcing US Fish and Wildlife to declare critical habitat for the jaguar. Even the head of Panthera and perhaps the world's leading jaguar expert - Alan Rabinowitz - said that was a terrible idea and a complete waste of Fish and Wildlife resources.

As much as I love cats (regulars here know that) and would love to see a genuine conservation effort on their behalf - I cannot foresee anything good coming out of this.

If I m correct a similar thing happened with the Thick-billed parrot as US Fish and Wildlife service was brought to court to force them to make a recovery plan. In the end they basically took the Mexican one and translated it into English with some additional information based on Snyder's experiences.
