Don't think this has been mentioned on here. Chester have put a planning application in for new Visayan Warty Pig enclosures under and around the new bridge near the Twilight Zone. Also includes an extension to the existing Spotted Deer enclosure.

Plans available here: Case File

it would make sense with the deer next door and the Philippine conservation hut in that area.

What would replace them though, now that the babirusa are getting a new enclosure as well?

This hasn't been mentioned but I have heard on the grape vine about something being planned here.

With HoA, does this mean there original plans for another Okapi paddock where the warty pigs are now wont go ahead?

Thanks for the link maguari, questions now, as one who has not had the pleasure of visiting Chester zoo (yet).

What height is the bridge at the enclosure site, will it be more of pit looking down on the animals

Is there much of an area for the pigs, the bridge seems to be quite wide covering a fair portion of the exhibit

when does work commence?

Thanks for your help in advance

It will be something of birds-eye view for most of it, yes!

They seem to be using every spare scrap of the land so it will give plenty of space.

As to your last question, planning hasn't been granted yet, and, though I don't expect there'll be any problems, it'll be a while before works starts I would say.

I had a feeling they'd end up putting something in that space eventually, hopefully there will be some viewing of the pigs possible from the ground aswell.

Im interested though to know what will replace them, the enclosure is way too small for something like tapirs or okapis. Duikers would be a good posibility? The mystery ungulate?

I was thinking about that space as I walked over the new bridge on Sunday. If it wasn't for the monorail, it would be wonderful for a large aviary which could be viewed from the ground or the bridge.
I think extra space for the spotted deer is very sensible and I will look with interest at the plans for the pigs. Thank you for the link.

My memory is a little hazy and it may have been moved, but if it's still in place, the Philippine conservation hut/picnic shelter could be used as a viewing shelter (the planning document seems to show it still in it's normal location)

i think they should re-consturct that whole area (the pig and buffalo house and the paddock with the empty pool) and build a pygmy hippo house and move the buffalo near the bongo, as the bongo never use all of that paddock

You would be surprise how much they do use of it.

I think this would make a good space for the VWPs, when the bridge was first built I thought it had potential. Has anyone noticed that there is a second group of spotted deer in the enclosure next to the cheetahs (visible from the bridge). They are separated from the group near the Indian rhinos by the public footpath.

They are there off-show breeding group, they also form there main group of these animals.

They have been ther for years as well. Am sure someone else will be able to confirm how long.

They are the giraffe section deer, the others by the Twilight Zone are the rhino section deer.

The offshow ones have been there since the original two pairs arrived in 2000 I think, but I can't be certain.

Thanks BongoRob, didn't realise that the two groups were looked after by two different sections.

Cheshire West & Chester council have approved the NEZS plans for the pig enclosure. The planning permission expires on 2nd June 2012.
