Newly discovered / described species 2015

There are still endless discoveries to be made!!!

Amazing - and humbling / sad when thinking of the Sixth Extinction and our sometimes baffling desire to go to Mars and beyond - how little we do yet know of our natural world and what remains undiscovered in terms of major biodiversity!

Researchers were cataloging animals being sold on the black market in the Philippines. To their surprise, two lizards they found were not known to science. Crazy!

Thanks for sharing TheMigthyOrca ! Alway intresting to read articles about newly discovered species and esp. if it happens in an unussual way.
These are BTW not the first animals discovered on markets, also fish-market already have been placed for new discoveries and even among Monitors these 2 species are not the first ones. Several species have been discovered in captivity ( and one even on TV ! ).

Heh, I know you're a fan of new species! Before I posted, I checked to make sure you didn't already post anything about it.

A while back, a new species of sea urchin was discovered on eBay. Pretty cool how we discover new species all the time. Granted, finding them on the black market isn't exactly encouraging, but hey, WAY better than not knowing they exist.

Must be somewhere in the 1980-ties when a German monitor-specialist was looking a documantary on TV about the wildlife of Yemen. In this film there was also a short piece of a Monitor which looked like a White-throated monitor. For the normal TV-viewer nothing special but the Monitor-specialist directly knew that that species was not known from Yemen. He contacted the makers of the film and asked if the piece about the monitor was realy made in Yemen - not everything on TV is true - or if they had used captive animals which were released to get the shots they wanted. After both questions were answered ( yes, it was filmed in Yemen and no, they didn't made use of captive animals ), he asked for more information about the exact place where the film was made.
I don't remember exactly if he went himself to Yemen or if the filmcrew went there again, but some time later a search for this monitor was started and at least one living animal was brought to Germany.
Here the monitor-specialist soon discovered it looked like the White-throated monitor but was clearly not one and discribed the species as new:
the Yemen monitor.
I gues if you Google Yemen monitor, you will find more exact dates ( and prop. pictures ) of this species.
