this may be on another thread but oh well.
Newquay zoo for a whiel now have been expanding into a small field, not really that big. They are planning to create a bigger african plains exhibit, which leaves the question What are they going to do with the current exhibit space?

And i've recieved their newslettter and a couple of staff went to somewhere in eastern europe to pick out a new antelope species(I can't remember where and i can't find the newletter, and they never said what species).

Does anyone know anymore or what they would like to see?

Cannot provide you with any other info on species, but that this new development has been on the cards for several years. It was always intended to be an African savannah-styled exhibit. I would assume that the lechwe, zebra, meerkats and lions would move to this area.
 
I think the Lions are staying where they are,will try to find my notes from my last visit to Newquay as i was told some species that the staff wanted to bring into the new area.
 
It was on some other thread and i am sure lesser kudu were mentioned.
 
i dont think the lions would move, i think it'll be just be a larger african plains exhibit, if the lion did move what would they put in their enclosure? leopards? the current enclosure not really big enough for the lions
 
A few years ago they were considering an African plain with Patas Monkeys mixed with more traditional hoofstock. Not heard of this combination being tried before, but I really like the idea.
 
Of course they do! - completely forgot about that. I was thinking more of a traditional "African Savannah" style enclosure.
 
I would like to see that with a guenon species, such as grivets or patas, if it's possible with baboons then I'm sure guenons would be less trouble with lechwe-sized antelope...
 
Woburn's monkeys live in the same heavily wooded enclosure(an oak wood) as the Bongo- however that's about as far as the 'mixed' exhibit goes.
 
does anyone one know what zoo geoff (the fossa born lat year-ish) is going to, i aksed last time i visited but they just told me somewhere in poland
 
sorry for restarting the thread, but ive just looked on the newquay zoo website and found out the new african plains exhibit will feature nyala, wildebeast, ostrich and zebras, and ive just found out they're planning a totally new phillipine area with spotted deer, fishing cats and warty pigs!

Well all the african hoofstock are on the surplus lists from quite a few collections in Europe and a couple in the U.K.

That really sounds interesting. I hope they can add on some primates to the savannah exhibit though (colobus and/or patas) and perhaps baboons.

The Philippine area is absolutely magnificent. It is nice to learn that quite a few zoos are now moving into the biodiversity hotspot Philippines fauna and welcome if that includes an in situ component too ...!!! :cool:
